Nebraska sideline

12/04/99

By Ken Stephens and Chip Brown / The Dallas Morning News

HEADLINER

ERIC CROUCH, QUARTERBACK

WHY HE'S ON THE SPOT: Crouch is the key to Nebraska's option attack, whether he's handing off up the middle, keeping it himself, pitching out to the trailing back or throwing downfield on the play action pass. Texas' talented defensive tackles should force the action wide. From there, the Longhorns will have a man on each side of the line dedicated to attacking Crouch. That should force the pitch-out, and Crouch and his running backs have had trouble connecting without fumbling.

WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR THEM LATELY: Crouch, who sprained a wrist in the first half of the Colorado game last week, has run for 123 yards or more in each of the last three games. For the season, he has run for 817 yards and 14 touchdowns while passing for 1,214 yards for seven more touchdowns.

THE TALK: "I've got nothing but praise for what he's done this year and how he's held up physically. We have not only used him as a quarterback, we've used him as an I-back virtually."

- Nebraska coach Frank Solich
