Churches planning memorial services

By RACHEL BOOMER -- The Daily News

Some metro churches are planning special services this weekend to remember the victims and families of Swissair Flight 111.

"I feel people need to emote. They want to participate," said Rabbi Saul Aranov yesterday. He'll conduct a non-denominational memorial service tonight at 7:15 p.m. at the Beth Israel Synagogue, 1480 Oxford St. in Halifax.

A Roman Catholic mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Basilica, on the corner of Spring Garden Road and Barrington Street in Halifax tomorrow at 5 p.m.

When Disaster Strikes is the theme of tomorrow's service at the Bay Road Baptist Church. The service will be held at the Glengarry School at 11 a.m. Rev. Alex Rockwell said he feels tragedy can bring out the best in the human spirit.

"We're feeling kind of frustrated and hopeless," Rockwell said, adding parishioners wish there was something they could do to help.

Rev. Rick Walsh has kept the Anglican church in Peggy's Cove open since the crash. Today, it will be closed to the media and the public so that family members can go there to grieve privately.

"It was a roughish day," Walsh said, but added community members are coping well with the tragedy.
