Arsenal recorded a magnificent win over their East London rivals to keep a hold on the defence of their Premiership crown.

Arsene Wenger's side picked up a remarkable 4-0 win against a Hammers side that gave home debuts to their two latest signings - Paolo Di Canio and Marc Vivien Foe.

But they could not prevent a rampant Arsenal side who stretched their unbeaten run to seven games without defeat. Boss Arsene Wenger was naturally delighted with his sides performance.

Wenger said: "We had a great first half and scored two great goals. After that they came out a bit more determined and we couldn't play our passing game like we played it in the first half.

"We finished the game with two great goals and always looked like we mastered the game. It was a good collective performance from the team.

"The win against Chelsea last week gave us a real lift and when we have everybody available like we did today, then you can see the real Arsenal out there."

Arsenal's next league match is the crucial visit to Old Trafford on Wednesday week to face the current leaders - Manchester United.

The Gunners will be without both Emmanuel Petit and Dennis Bergkamp who are suspended but Wenger knows that they must get something from the game if they are to keep a grip on their title that they won last year.

Wenger said: "Last season it was only between us and Manchester United. But this season, there is Chelsea and Aston Villa.

"For us, it is a vital game because Man-Utd have played one more game than us and they have got a psychological advantage.

"We have to play our normal game but third is a good position to be in at this stage of the season. There is an International week coming up and I just hope we don't lose more players."

Wenger was delighted that the goals were split around the side with Bergkamp, Overmars, Anelka and Parlour all getting in on the act.

This emphatic win sets up nicely for our next game against Sheffield United next Saturday in the FA Cup, but more importantly for the mouthwatering clash against United in 10 days time.
