Amoeba Wars

Board game published by Avalon Hill
These remarks by E.T. Smith
Scores of conquer-the-galaxy tactical boardgames have been published over the years, but Ameoba Wars has got to have one of the funkiest framing stories of them all, with the players not only fighting each other, but also having them deal with planet- sized globs of cosmic protoplasm. Both the board and the mechanics are a bit abstract and simplified, but the game is still challenging, as your tactics change depending upon which foe you are facing. The amoebas are only semi-randomn, and a wily player can use them to defeat the foe he isn't powerful enough to attack directly. Unfortunately, this game has been out of print for at least a decade, so copies are at best obscure.
