Crochet Patterns

Size: 18" high.

Materials: Knitting worsted, 5 ozs. White (W), 1 oz. yellow (Y), small amounts of red ®, black (B), and blue.

Crochet hook size G.

Tow small metal buttons.

Stuffing.

GAUGE: 7 sc = 2"; 9 rows = 2".

SWAN: BODY: (make 2 pieces) :With W, ch 34.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across--33 sc. Ch 1, turn each row.

Row 2: Mark beg of row 2 for front edge; 2 sc in first sc, sc across.

Rows 3-24: Work in sc, inc st at front edge on rows 6, 10 and 14, inc 1 st at back edge on rows 6 and 10. Work even on 39 sc through row 24, end at back edge. Ch 1, turn.

Tail: Sc in first 6 sts. Ch 1, turn. Sk first st, sc across--5 sc. Work in sc, dec 1 sc every other row (front edge of tail), until 2 sc remain. End off.

Back: Row 1: Join W with sc in next st on back, sc in next 21 sc. Ch 1, turn each row.

Row 2: Sk first sc, sc across to 2 sc from end, sk next sc, sc in last sc.

Row 3: Sc across to 2 sc from end, sk next sc, sc in last sc. Repeat rows 2 and 3 twice, then repeat row 2--11 sc. End off.

Neck: Row 1: Join W with sc in next st on back, sc in last 10 sc.

Rows 2-11: Work even on 11 sc, end at front edge.

Row 12: Sk first sc, sc across--10 sc. * Work even for 3 rows. Repeat row 12. Repeat from * twice more. Work even on 7 sc until neck is 9' from start of neck, end front edge.

Head:

Row 1: 2 sc in each of first 2 sc, SC across.

Row 2: Sc across, 2 sc in each of last 2 sc--ll sc. Ch 6, turn.

Row 3: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 4 ch, sc in each sc across--16 SC.

Rows 4-8: Work in sc, dec 1 sc at front edge every row.

Rows 9 and 10: Work even on 11 sc.

Row 11: Inc 1 st at front edge, dec 1 st at back edge.

Row 12: Dec 1 st at back edge, work

Rows 13-16: Repeat rows 11 and 12 twice. End off.

FACE: (make 2): With B, beg at eye section, ch 2. Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Working in sc, inc 1 st each side of next 3 rows--8 sc. Work 2 rows even. Dec 1 st each side of next 3 rows--2 sc. Work last 2 sc tog. End off. With R, working toward point of eye, sc in end of each of 2 even rows, sc in end of each row to point of eye, 3 sc in point, sc along other diagonal edge in same way, sc in end of each of 2 even rows. Ch 1, turn. Work 1 more row sc, working 3 sc in sc at point. End off: leave end for sewing. Sew face to front of head (V shaped section), joining R edges only.

BEAK (make 2 pieces): With Y, beg at front of beak, ch 2.

Row 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn each row.

Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, sc in last sc.

Row 3: Sc in first 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc.

Row 4: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 3 sc.

Row 5: Sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last SC--6 SC.

Row 6: 2 sc in first sc, sc across--7 sc.

Rows 7 and 8: Repeat rows 5 and 6--9 sc.

Rows 9 and 10: Work even.

Row 11: Sc in each of 4 sc; ch 1, turn.

Row 12: Sk first sc, sc in each of 3 sc.

Row 13: Sc in first sc, sk next sc, sc in last sc.

Row 14: Sk first sc, sc in last sc. End off; leave end for sewing. Sew diagonal edge of last 4 rows and 5 sc unworked on row 10 to front of face along bottom R and B edge only. When sewing 2nd side of body, face and beak tog, be sure to reverse pieces.

BOTTOM SECTION: With W, ch 28.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across--27 sc. Ch 1, turn each row.

Rows 2-5: Work in sc, inc 1 sc each side every row--35 sc.

Rows 6 and 7: Work even.

Rows 8-11: Dec 1 sc each side every row--27 sc. End off.

FEET: (make 4 pieces): With Y, ch 8.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd sc from hook and in each ch across--7 sc.

Rows 2-5: Work in sc, inc 1 st each side every row--15 sc. Work even until piece measures about 2-1/4''. Sc in each of first 4 sc. Ch 1, turn. Working on these sts only, dec 1 st each row at inside edge only until 1 st remains. End off.

Working on next 7 sc of last long row, dec 1 st each row at both edges until 1 st remains. End off. Working on last 4 sc of last long row, dec 1 st each row at inside edge only until 1 st remains. End off.

EYES (make 2): With blue, ch 3. S1 st in first ch to form ring. Ch 1, 8 sc in ring. S1 st in first sc. End off.

WINGS (make 2): With blue, ch 58. End off; leave end for sewing.

FINISHING: Sew 2 sides of swan tog, leaving open at bottom. Stuff firmly. Sew in bottom section. Sew 2 pieces tog for each foot, stuffing before closing last seam. Attach a foot to each side. Sew eyes in place with a button at center of each. Sew chains for wings in place.
