The battle of the press release rages on. Last week Oracle wrote a press release announcing it's victory over IBM by being "the first" to have an enterprise edition application server available for Linux. Today, Inprise/Borland announced that it had beat Oracle because Inprise offered an entperprise version of IAS back in october.

The media paints a picture of J2EE compliance causing application servers to become commodities - cheap J2EE compliant clones that cannot be differentiated from each other. J2EE has always been about cooperating on specifications but competing on implementation, so I don't see this as likely. The folks at 365java.com and Gemstone Systems agree.

Inprise/Borland today announced the immediate availability of the Inprise Application Server 4.1. New features include Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) support, enhanced EJB transaction support with full two-phase commit, a JDBC 2.0/XA supporting transaction manager, an integrated JMS implementation, and better CMP support.
