linkwatcher death march [11:45]|
Yikes. I just realized that when I move, linkwatcher's probably going to die. Maybe I can set up my machine at work to take over the load.. Or maybe I can train my linux box to actually dial out, connect to the internet, and then hang up. But it'll still probably be dead for a few days.
linkwatcher search is dead? [21:18]|
Apparently, linkwatcher's blogsearch function is completely dead. I don't really know why that's so, and worse: I don't have a way to fix it right now. Even when it did work, the searches were completely out of date. So, for the sake of linkwatcher fans everywhere, I'm just going to pull the plug on it.
I'll put it back up when I have all of the following:
Neither of these are particularly hard tasks. They just take time.
- a way to get the current versions of each blog into the index.
headline viewer fix? [11:36]|
I turned linkwatcher's headline viewer back on. After I removed GettingIt from the list, it seems to work with no problems. The headlines should automatically every two hours now.
Maybe if I have some free time tomorrow, I'll clean up the search engine.
Why didn't someone tell me linkwatcher hasn't updated in ten days? Better yet, why doesn't my bot tell me that? :/
Update: Oh. Duh. I had my computer unplugged the whole time I was on vacation... And I guess something screwed up the past couple days. Anyway, I rebooted and I think its fixed now.
Huh. I thought the front page channels on linkwatcher were completely broken.. But only a couple of them are. I deleted them...
Update: aha. GettingIt was causing the problems for moreover.. Which means I ought to have some exception handling in that script so one problem doesn't kill the others.. but oh well. Anyway, it seems I only had to get rid of the one...
I still have to run that bot manually... :/
SURVEY: passwords [12:26]|
Hey, everyone reading this: please take a moment to answer my
simple survey about passwords:
When joining an online service, how important is it that your password is secure? Would you rather be able to have your password emailed to you as plaintext, or would you prefer one-way encryption so that nobody would know your password, but you'd have to let the system generate a new one and email it to you if you forgot?
This question will effect linkwatcher's and manifestation.com's personalization features, as well as the rest of the tools I'm building.
Update: David Chess pointed out his frustration with passwords, making me realize that they're not really needed at all. I added a third option to the poll: just brand me with a cookie if I want membership, and (optionally) let give my email address for cookie insurance.
Supreme Court opinions [10:55]|
Linkwatcher now watches the supreme court.
That's it... No more Mr. Metalog. [23:28]|
I said back on the 29th that I was going to move my personal blog over to sabren.com.
Well, I've done so. Sorry 'bout that, but I really want to make linkwatcher more about the community and less about me.
Instead of a service for reading multiple blogs, the metalog will persist as news about what's going on with linkwatcher.. After all, that's pretty much what "linkwatcher metalog" means.
Owen Leonard, creator of the Little Czech Primer was cool enough to create a little favicon for linkwatcher. (It only shows up in IE5) Thanks, Owen!
did I break something? [15:59]|
Uh-oh. 19 of the blogs on the list didn't have their records updated. They should have ALL registered as having changed, since there wasn't an original to diff them against. Or maybe they only catch the first change. I'm not sure. Crap. crap. crap. I guess I'll just wait and see if they get updated...
like my redesign? [00:46]|
Heh. Can you call this a redesign? I added the times, and got rid of the lines between entries. I think its a lot less harsh this way.
last ten emails [23:33]|
Whew. Okay, I think I've taken care of all the add requests and url changes. I've still got ten emails left in the linkwatcher box, but they're all things that require thinking, so I'll put them off for a while. (Sorry if it's your email. My brain's toast.)
60 down, 42 to go... [17:46]|
Whew. Well, I'm down to 42 messages in my linkwatcher box... I need a break.. More later.
more to come [00:06]|
Whew. There's a whole lot of blogs to add. I guess it doesn't help that I read each new blog I add.. Anyway, I'm going to have to break this up over a few days.
new blogs! it's true! [22:43]|
Heh. If it's not obvious, I finally got my admin page working, and will be adding something like a hundred new blogs over the next couple hours.
real changes coming soon [03:04]|
I know I keep saying this, but major changes to linkwatcher are just around the corner. With the user login code that I created for zikeshop yesterday, the ability to maintain your own blog, watchlist, and channels won't be far behind...
purty colors [08:05]|
I decided to make code stuff gold. :) Why? I dunno. I like colors.
metalog madness! [00:33]|
To tell you the truth, this weblog was not what I had in mind when I made up the idea for "linkwatcher metalog". My personal journal/blog was to be over at sabren.com and this was to be a compilation of entries from other blogs...
By August, I plan to move my stuff from here to sabren.com, and totally replace linkwatcher metalog with a customizable service for reading multiple blogs at once. I think that by default, it'll show only the entries for my own blog and manifestation.com. That way I don't break anyone's links. BUT: it'll be completely customizable, so that you can read whatever blogs and newsfeeds you want, provided they publish an XML stream.
But, I've got a shopping cart to do first. Good things come to those who wait.
linkwatcher admin still lagging [04:12]|
There's still a couple issues getting my admin script to work. All of this stems from my normalizing the database... Normalizing your data is good, but the more normalized the data, the more code you have to write.. (The Zike Data Classes minimize that code, but I'm still working on them!)
linkwatcher admin not simplified yet... [03:12]|
Huh. I thought I'd have a chance to get to the new linkwatcher admin stuff today, but I'm wiped out after that refactoring. I'll do it tomorrow.. er.. today.. (damn this staying up late).. er.. saturday, or sunday.. whatever.. :)
