Hurricane Safe Haven for Space Shuttle

photo of Space Shuttle stack in doorway of Vehicle Assembly BuildingFor the first time in Space Shuttle history, a fully stacked Shuttle rolled into the Vehicle Assembly Building's (VAB) high bay 2 on the building's west side on Saturday. The VAB and nearby rock-paved crawlerway have recently undergone major modifications to allow more storage space and protection – "Safe Haven" - for Shuttle flight hardware from hurricanes or tropical storms. After the successful "fit-check," the 6-million pound Crawler-Transporter carried Orbiter Atlantis, the twin solid rocket boosters and external tank, along with the Mobile Launcher Platform, to Launch Pad 39B in preparation for launch on Sept. 8.
