Special Deputy Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs

Special Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for securing all four courthouses within Windham County and for security at the Department of Social Services in Willimantic.

The functions Special Deputy Sheriffs perform include metal detector, court baliff, transportation, and lock-up. Sheriffs are also responsible for jury security during civil and criminal trials.

Special Deputy Sheriffs are sworn peace officers carrying full arresting powers within their county. Special Deputy Sheriffs however limit their powers to the courthouses and security posts.

Deputy Sheriffs are referred to as process servers. They are responsible for the service of restraining orders, protective orders, bank executions, subeoneas, and tax executions.

Deputy Sheriffs unlike Special Deputy Sheriffs can perform both duties. They can work in the courts if needed and requested by the High Sheriff.

Special Deputy Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs are appointed by the High Sheriff for the term of the High Sheriffs office.
