CAL POLY LOSES TO STANFORD IN SECOND ROUND OF NCAA WOMEN’S COLLEGE CUP
Cal Poly had its season come to an end on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Stanford in the second round of the Women’s College Cup. Senior defender Kara Grondzik scored the lone Mustang goal on a penalty kick in the final minute of the game. The Mustangs were held to just nine shots while the Cardinal took 20 shots on goalkeeper Lauren Stevenson. Stanford jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead as Kelly Adamson scored two goals and assisted on another.

The Mustangs reached the second round by defeating Fresno State, 2-1, in the opening round of the tournament last Wednesday. Michelle George and Eryn Gerhard scored the goals for Cal Poly.

The Mustangs were making their first appearance in the NCAA tournament and were the second straight Big West team to advance to the second round.

RECORD SEVEN TEAMS FINISH WITH DOUBLE DIGIT POINTS:
Balance was seen throughout the Big West conference season this year with a record seven teams finishing with at least 11 points, and all teams notching at least two wins. Making the biggest improvement over last year’s record was UC Santa Barbara which won four more conference games than the team did a year ago. Cal Poly ranked second with a three-game improvement, turning three ties from last year into wins this season.

PACIFIC’S LUCCHESI CHOSEN AS BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE YEAR; FOUR CAL POLY PLAYERS SELECTED TO FIRST TEAM
University of the Pacific senior forward Jamee Lucchesi was selected as the Big West Conference’s Women’s Soccer Player of the Year as the All-Conference teams were announced on Friday. Lucchessi led the league in scoring with 14 goals and 30 points and started in all of the Tigers’ 19 games. Her five game-winners also led the league. She broke the Pacific school record for most career goals with her 38th and 39th career tallies in the Tigers’ final game against San Francisco. Her 89 career points puts her in third place on the Big West Conference’s all-time chart. Lucchesi, from Orangeville, CA, made her first appearance on the first team.

Cal Poly, which was the only Big West team to appear in the NCAA Women’s College Cup, had four players selected to the All-Big West First Team, leading all schools. Seniors Jill Nelsen and Andrea Sievers made their second appearance on the first team while senior Michelle George and junior Katie Kassis were honored for the first time.

Rounding out the first team were North Texas’ Krista Davey and Christy Johnson, UC Santa Barbara’s Meghann Phillips, Cal State Fullerton’s Amy Barnes, Pacific’s Kim McCaskey, and Utah State’s Jayme Gordy.

UC Santa Barabara head coach Paul Stumpf was chosen by his peers as the Big West Coach of the Year. Stumpf guided the Gauchos to a third place finish in the league standings with a 5-4 conference record and 8-9-1 overall record. The Gauchos increased their win total from 1998 by four wins in league play and moved up six spots in the standings.
