The Code Book is a history of cryptography (the science of secret codes), from Ancient Egypt to the 21st century. Simon Singh describes the age-old battle between codemakers and codebreakers, a struggle that has resulted in a series of brilliant scientific breakthroughs. He also recounts how cryptography has had a dramatic impact on history, and describes how broken codes have caused the deaths of monarchs, and how they have determined the outcomes of battles and the fates of nations.

At the end of The Code Book, the author has included The Cipher Challenge, ten separate messages encrypted using a series of different codes and ciphers, some ancient, some modern. Each of the ten messages contains a code word, and the first person to crack all ten stages and send in all ten code words will win a prize of £10,000. For full details of The Cipher Challenge, please refer to The Code Book.

This web site tracks the progress of The Cipher Challenge. By checking the leader board, you can see who was the first person to crack each stage, and you will also see which is the next stage to be cracked. If you think that you have cracked the next stage, then please send in your solution according to the instructions in The Code Book. If you are correct, and if you are indeed the first person to crack the next stage, then your name will be added on the leader board.

Please note that neither Simon Singh nor the publishers can enter into any correspondence regarding The Cipher Challenge. Simon Singh will only contact entrants who are the first to crack a new stage.

If all ten stages have not been solved by 1 October 2000, then whoever is at the top of the leader board will win a prize of £1,000. The main £10,000 prize will remain until 1 January 2010. If nobody has cracked all ten stages by this date, then the prize will be awarded to whoever is at the top of the leader board.

Good luck and get cracking!
