The HAARP Aircraft Alert Radar

Aircraft Alert Radar Photo

An S-band radar has been installed at the HAARP site for evaluation during the developmental prototype phase of the HAARP project. The radar will be used to disable HAARP transmissions when aircraft are detected in air space close to the array.

Initial tests of this radar have demonstrated its ability to detect all types of aircraft including small general aviation planes typically used in Alaska.

The photo to the left shows the display console for the radar. The console is located in the Temporary Operations Center, immediately adjacent to primary control operator's console. A VHF receiver tuned to aircraft ground-to-air communication channels is used to monitor local traffic.
