Bleachers are back!

We have been searching and scrounging, fretting over not having a report in sooner, and wondering why nothing that was scheduled for release had been filling the toy shelves where we live. Then, we took a trip to Ravyn's parent's house, made a special trip to a few toy stores and wah-la! Things we hadn't seen had been released and shipped, but our area hadn't gotten them. So, long overdo, but with something to report, we invite you to join us in the Bleachers.

From: WhiteChocolate
I am so damn upset. I was under the impression that Mattel NBA was through. Then I saw a whole bunch of figures at a Toys R Us. 99-00 season. On the back of a Antawn Jamieson I saw my dream -- a Jason Williams figure. Yes!!! No, it wasn't Jayson Williams. It was good old number 55 in a "Best of the West" or "Stars of the West" grouping (I don't remember). I must have this figure. I know that it probably will not even marginally resemble the real deal, but I don't care. After all, I have put up with Starting Lineups for quite some time. Please pass along any information about these pieces to your loyal readers.. Can't Mattel get their act together? On a side note, with everyone having seen those awesome McFarlane sports prototypes, I hope that he can pick up the NFL and NBA licenses to go along with the MLB and NHL ones. Now that would be something to see. Take care and happy hunting!
Rollo's Response:
We too are excited about McFarlane's entry into the sports industry. Hopefully, the TonyTwist incident (which is reported on below) will not deter or delay McFarlane in his release of those action figures. As for the Mattel Basketball, we here in the midwest have not even seen cases that included such rookies as Jason Williams or Vince Carter. I believe that most of these landed only on the west coast.

Is there any place to get a list for the 2000 extended. I know some of the names but would like to find out all of them. .

JAKKS Pacific has released its WWF Rulers of the Ring assortment, which features WWF Superstars Tazz, Ivory, Devon Dudley, Buh-Buh Ray Dudley, Edge and Al Snow. Each figure is limited to a run of 10.000 so they should be flying off the shelves almost as soon as they hit them. This set is the first time any of the personas have been made Titan Tron Ready, and it is the first time any of them have been made into an action figure with the exception of Al Snow. Originally thought to be a KB Toys exclusive, sources say the assortment will see a general release.

Rulers of the Ring 2 is in the works, expected to follow its premier line with a release set around September. Scheduled to be featured in the set is Too Cool, including all three members: Scotty Too Hotty, Grand Master Sexay and Rikishi.

WWF Back Talkin' Crushers, by JAKKS Pacific is to be released this fall. Superstars The Rock, Road Dogg, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Mankind fill the second series of the Talkin' Crushers line. Unlike the first wave, round 2 figures are "Tron Ready" for any of JAKKS/WWF interactive playsets. Real Scan technology is being used for this production, so expect amazing likenesses.

Real Scan technology has also been used for the Titan Tron Live 5 series starring Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, Test and Kurt Angle. Release has been scheduled for Fall 2000.

Flick Trix Finger Bikes, which are miniature die-cast metal replicas of Mongoose, Diamond Back, Huffy and other top brands of BMX models are racing their way to the shelves. A product of Spin Master Toys, Flick Trix Finger Bikes, stand less than 3 inches tall and let your fingers do the riding. Series II isn't far behind. Set II is produced under 3 new BMX licenses- S&M, Nirve and Volume -- and 20 new bike styles, 3 different tire tread styles, and 2 handlebar styles.

New in stores this month are the Playsets of the Extreme Half Pipe Park and the Extreme Bowl. An Extreme Platform Playset also is available with a suggested price of $14.99. In August, Flick Trix action figures of BMX stars Matt Hoffman on a Hoffman bike, Fuzzy Hall on a Mongoose and John Purse on a Redline ñwill available for sales.

Hasbro's new SLU Wheaties Collection featuring the stars listed below are selling for about $14.99. The assortment will combine the prestige of collectible Wheaties tribute boxes and the artistic molding of SLU figures. Each Starting Lineup figure will stand 4.5 inches tall, and come packaged in a commemorative mini-sized, replica Wheaties box. The item will also come complete with an official, co-branded Starting Lineup Wheaties collector card.

Former NHL, St. Louis Blues player Tony Twist, who claimed his name was stolen for use in Todd McFarlane's "Spawn" comic book and cartoon series sued Todd McFarlane on the grounds that the mobster character ``Antonio Twistelli'' was named after him without his consent. The St. Louis Circuit Court jury agreed with Twist and awarded him $24.5 million. McFarlane said he would appeal. Otherwise, the award could put him out of business. Twist claimed McFarlane's character - which shares a nickname with the real person, but no physical attributes - had damaged the value of his name and cost him the ability to get product endorsements. McFarlane had testified the Twist name came from an old-time mob figure's nickname; but in a letter once sent to a fan he had said the character was named after a player for the Quebec Nordiques, Twist's former team. Although there is a person with the same name, the Tony Twist comic book foe shares no physical characteristics and is not based on Tony Twist the hockey player. The Twist character in Spawn is a minor one, appearing in only 166 of the nearly 31,000 images in the Spawn series. The appeals process is lengthy. It's likely to be several years before this drama plays out. McFarlane stated his companies will still run on time. The action figures will still be on store shelves, the comics will still be printed, the movie and entertainment pitches will still be made.

Let's check out the mail bag and see what you all wanted to know before we move onto the information we have for you. With summer release near, production is up and we've much to tell you.

From: Monk #81
At the Startinglineup site, they posted pictures of NFL Wheaties SLU's. Will this be a mail- in offer? Also, what's with all the NFL lines this year? Hobby..elite..etc.,I have enough trouble collecting a single line!
Rollo's Reply
I believe that the Wheatie's Series is going to be a retail release however, I have seen ads in Previews Magazine for preorders of the set. As for the other, I'm not sure, but Ravyn believes it's a marketing ploy to boost sales.

From: Steve
Have a question regarding the Mattel Basketball. Do you know if the Jordan and Bryant window box 4 figures were a dealer only issue. Like all the Mattel basketball very hard to find except for the first series players. Nobody has seen them at retail stores here in California.

From: Jeff
What is the deal with Mattel basketball figures? Are they cancelled? Who made it to stores? Will they ever come out ?
Rollo's Review
As for the Jordan/Bryant window box, I've personally never seen them, but it seems to me that they were a dealer only issue. Mattel has really dropped the ball since receiving its NBA license. Ravyn thinks that the reason for Mattel's halt in production is because of the recent resignation and appointment of CEO's. With Mattel's executive offices in turmoil, it makes sense that they would slow their manufacturing and devote a majority of efforts into getting that settled. When things are running smoothly again, expect them to concentrate on their business-TOYS!

From: David
Well I hear that there are no Ravens SLU this year. That is going on with Hasbro? Last year I did not they did not make any Ravens SLU. It is not doing good for fellow Ravens Fan like me in MD.
Rollo's Response
Hasbro probably didn't want to produce a Baltimore figure while their All-Star, Ray Lewis is facing a murder trial. But, hold true to your fandom, Heaven knows that Cowboy fans such as myself have seen our superstars serving their fair share of jail time and taking heat for their off-field actions.

Slu-Wheaties Collectors Edition-Series I

Young, Steve--San Francisco 49ers

Notice in May's issue of Lee's Action Figure News and Toy Review, on page 46, that Griffey, Jr., is depicted in a batting pose rather than the sliding pose that we have seen him with in stores. In the SLU Extended Set, maybe we should expect a repainted version of the batting pose with a Red's uniform. Just a thought.

Hasbro, Inc. announced that it has signed a long-term agreement with artist Sam Bass. The first project under the joint efforts is a collection of die-cast cars set to debut in August 2000 . Each Winner's Circle Sam Bass Collection will offer a Bass mini art print and a corresponding 1:43-scale Winner's Circle die- cast vehicle, selling at retail for about $9.99.. The first assortment of the series includes: Dale Earnhardt/GM Goodwrench Chevrolet with Bass' "The Magnificent Seven" art print, Jeff Gordon/DuPont Chevrolet with the car design template, Tony Stewart/Home Depot Pontiac with "1999 Rookie of the Year" art print, and Dale Jarrett/Ford Quality Care Service Ford with "American Dream" art print.

JAKKS Pacific will be releasing WWF Back Talking Crushers Series 2 this June. Similar to Series 1, each figure shouts out when it's joints are bent. Unlike the first series however, Series 2 is Titan Tron Live and Trash Talking Stage interactive. Because JAKKS has used Real Scan technology, look for some really amazing pieces of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mankind, The Rock and Road Dogg.

JAKKS Pacific has released images of their WWF Titan Tron Live series 4 assortment. Using the Real Scan technology on this set as well, the figures in this Series should look great. Keep an eye out for Triple H, Cactus Jack, X-Pac, Road Dogg, Big Show and The Rock. They should be hitting toy shelves soon.

RELIEF FOR RAVYN
Remember my rant a while back about how I was tired of seeing Toy Biz/WCW doing the same figures over and over with only a simple repaint and new box? Guess what, lads and lasses?! I think they finally got the point. Several new lines are set for release in the upcoming year, including, the first Vampiro and WCW Jeff Jarrett figures ever! It ain't no freakin' La Parka, but it's a good change. Combine them with the Bash at the Beach Playset scheduled for release this summer, and we're on the right track. The BATB set is supposed to be mirrored after the actual stage to be used at this year's Pay-per-View event.

Along with the guys, 12-inch figures of the Nitro Girls are in the works. And speaking of freaks, let me include Toy Biz's "Cyborg Wrestlers". Although interesting enough for the first glance, I'd expect these to be about as popular as SLU's Pro Action Series. If you like the Terminator meets Spawn kind of thing, look for these in the fall. Continuing with the mutated theme we seem to have going, watch for "Gross-Out Wrestlers". Over-sized, bug-eyed, chicken-legged monsters of WCW Superstars. (As if Scott Steiner's bulging-veins arm wasn't bad enough.) To combat these mutants, Toy Biz is planning to release SLAM Force Wrestlers. Straight out of the comic books, these figures are equipped with crazy clothing and gear. With the right marketing strategy, Toy Biz may have struck on something here. I've only seen the Sting so far, and I'll admit it looks a bit cheesy (with it's joints plainly visible), but, I have to say, it's one of the better pieces they've done in awhile.

And if not, at least it's a refreshing view, even though, I'm still waiting on La Parka.

Got all Hot Wheels 1-11 now. New NASCAR out, Stewart, Jarrett, M&M millenium edition. Also, future looks good with the McFarlane toys, have started to show up at TRU's. Can't wait for the Bob & Doug Mackenzie figs.

From: Dwight
The hunt for Baseball 2000 in Alexandria Va. has been great. Walmart was stocked with racks of the McGwire 500th Home Run piece, and TRU is restocking daily. I also picked up a Charlie Batch in Burlington, North Carolina, just sitting on the pegs at Wal Mart. Question??? Is Troy Glaus the hot Baseball 2000 piece? Thanks. P.S. I'm still willing to trade for a Mark McGwire 97 extended.
Rollo's Reply
Congrats on the finds. As for your question about the 2000 Baseball, my heart tells me that the Shawn Green Rookie piece is going to be the one to own. Also, You might want to pick up a few of Griffey's last Mariner piece.

From: Monk #81
Did anybody else catch the new Rams uniforms at startinglineup.com,before they were taken down? If not,I have them, and what's with all the different NFL lines Hasbro has listed for 2000??? Does Rollo or Ravyn know?
Rollo's Review Don't really know what is up with the Hobby Special Set, although I have listed the contents of the set below. I especially look forward to the Woodson & A. Smith pieces. Depending on the production numbers, you may be looking at some really scarce pieces for Aikman, T. Davis and M. Faulk. I have no idea what the Football Elite will encompass but there's one for Baseball as well.

Since the mailbox was a little sparse this week, let me entertain you with a few set lists for SLU's.

Kelloggs is teaming up with Mattel and NASCAR to offer collectors a mail-in offer for one of 11 different NASCAR Hot Wheels Pull 'N Go mini-car. This is the first time Mattel has offered the mini-cars in the United States. Ten cars display the cereal brand logo and one car is a replica of the official #5 Kellogg's Chevrolet driven by two-time NASCAR champion Terry Labonte. While the cars are free, Kellogs is also offering a special carrying case priced at $4.99.

As Rollo is currently with his parents, I'll be taking care of the Bleachers this week. Don't worry, he'll be back in time for the next report, so I won't have time to do too much damage. Rollo's just helping his parents with the grieving process as his great aunt passed away recently. I daresay she's better off now, but anyways, down to business. You've all been patiently waiting for it.

I saw an unopened box of 1999 AL baseball SLU's at TRU today. Where they were gathering dust at, I don't know . . . Didn't notice whether they were clearanced or not. Other than the occasional Maximum Air Jordan, they haven't gotten anything new SLU-wise in ages. However, they did get the big basketball figures: Pippen, Duncan & Hill. What have you heard about the McFarlane Slap Shot figs? Are they comic book store exclusives only or what?
Ravyn's Reply:
My apologies to you Scott. Somehow, we've managed to overlook your post twice now. It's not our intention to ignore any of our readers and we're truly sorry for our mistake. In any case, the SLU drought should be slackening up as the first waves of Baseball are hitting the shelves. We found the Slap Shot pieces at our local Wal-Mart just yesterday, so it doesn't appear as if they're exclusives.

From: Hawkeye
Well, well, well, Finally the toys have come back to the shelves. Amazingly new stuff out. SLU-new 2000 baseball: Bonds, Clemens, Johnson, Piazza, etc. but no Nomar or Pedro for us Sox fans. Nice packaging but same poses. Bonds bunting, yeah you see that often. College Basketball: Bill Walton, James Worthy, David Robinson, Jerry Stackhouse, Cheryl Swoopes, Isaiah Thomas all in college uniform. new 2000 Winners Circle 1:64, 1:24 Gordon, Labonte, Stewart, Atwood, Earnhardt, Jarrett and others Also new 2000 FE Hot Wheels cars 1-3 are everywhere, but up to cars 17 are out if you are lucky. Number 9 is one of the best designs. The neon orange truck sucks though. I have seen all of the above in the KC area at Wal-Marts and TRU so if they got em here, they are sure to be out quick to the rest of y'all. Luckily I have been able to find my Tony Stewart stuff. Also got lucky enough to pick up a 1:24 Habitat for Humanity at Home Depot. WCW new Power Slams out as well. Personally thought the Roddy Piper one was the best. Also have seen the Simpsons figures, and although they weren't related to sports, couldn't pass up a Krusty the clown figure. What else is out there? Let us know!! Happy hunting.

From: Dwight
Just checked the Hasbro SLU page. They are offering Johnny Unitas and Dan Fouts. If you collect quarterbacks, this appears to be a good pick -up. Also, I noticed they are offering a baseball Team of the 90's -limited to 5,000. It doesn't appear to be selling. It has been offered for several months and they still have it on the shelf. Plus, they just reduced the price. Anyone out there have a feel for this piece?
Ravyn's Review
This reminds me a lot of the Olympic Basketball Team sets. Used to sit and collect dust, but now, you can't find one. If the price continues to drop, it might be worth stocking up on a couple.

From: Scott
Baseball 2000 hit the downtown TRU with no Sosa's left--natch. Also the $1.00 price hike to $8.99 was not appreciated. The Clemens with goatee looked cool but none of the others did anything for me. Lotsa 3 pack Rodmans and 12" Pippens collecting dust. Once they doff the Bulls uniform . . .

From: Marty I have heard from a very reliable source that Mattel has canceled all basketball assortments after the D case. Only A,B,C,D, will ship. Carter and Kobe are in the D case which has shown up at So. CA. TRU. Initial plans were for 6-7 different cases, so a lot of good rookies on the initial list won't be showing up. There is rumor of a treasure hunt piece being randomly inserted into next year's cases. A gold colored piece is the current rumor. Does anybody care since Mattel can't seem to get their act together
Ravyn's Review
Perhaps this is all part of the current renditions happening at Mattel. Recently, Ned Mansour, president of Mattel is planning on resigning his position at the end of this month. Mattel seems to be in deep trouble as his leaving leaves almost no senior officers on staff. This follows 2 months after the resignations of both Jill Barad (Chief Executive) and Harry Pearce (Chief Financial Officer) in Feburary. For now, board member Ronald Loeb is serving as acting CEO and board member William Rollnick serves as acting chairman. Hmmm... maybe they should have taken the time to resculpt. Might have saved them the current trouble in paradise...

From: Scott
Hey I am searching for the Winner's Circle '99 Corvettes of the Cleveland Browns---I have seen every other Winner's Circle NFL car--except my beloved Browns. If anyone has or ever acquires these cars---need them. Please let me know. Meijers has 2000 baseball out, Wal-mart also.

From: Scott
I got to crack open a case of Baseball 2000 this AM at TRU. No Sosa, Yes McGwire, nice horizontal pose for Griffey (still in his Mariner uniform) Vladimir Guerrero, J.D. Drew and Troy Glaus. Couldn't get 'em all so I left a few for the Old man of Chgo SLU collecting. I don't like the $1 price hike to $8.99. Happy hunting.
Ravyn's Response
Keep hunting as more waves have been hitting the shelves recently. The price hike isn't nice, but you either pay it or don't. Guess it all depends on how badly you want the pieces... as for Rollo, he probably won't be getting sets any more, just the occasional figure that strikes his fancy. Also, be on the lookout for the Mark McGwire 500 Home Run Figure. It comes with a normal sized motion card and retails around $9 at local Wal-Marts.

From: McCarty
I just got my Slap Shot figures from McFarlane and They are INCREDIBLE!!! The detail is unbelievable and the quality is great. This makes me that much more excited about the NHL series due out. If he maintains this level of quality with the real players, they will be works of art. Look out Hasbro, you may lose another major license!!!

From: Monk #82
2000 NFL assortments at http://www.startinglineup.com!!!! Yes, they have been revealed! 2 different colors for Ricky Williams!!!
Rollo's Retort
(Had to slip this one in.) I'm very disappointed with this release. Football is one of the consistent sellers for Kenner SLU and I thought, they could have included more figures to the set. I feel they left a lot of deserving players out. The uniform variations for the Kurt Warner and Ricky Williams figures don't do anything for me. And as far as I remember, Kurt Warner had a goatee the entire season, what's up with the clean shaven fig? The retirement figures are nice, but could have been a complete set in their own. The case assortments favor the scalper and any backroom associates who stumble upon the case as every figure is shipping one per case. Set collectors will have a hard time completing this year's SLU Football.

What's New

JAKKS Pacific will be releasing WWF Federation Fighters Series 2 12" action figures in April. The first series led with Steve Austin, Kane and Undertaker figures that were released late last year. This time around, look for Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker and The Big Show. Each figure stands approximately 12" tall, features multiple points of articulation (including hidden elbow joints), cloth costumes and accessories.
