FIASCO: Fractal Image And Sequence COdec
Description
FIASCO is a fractal still image and video compression system for low bit-rates. I developed FIASCO during my Ph.D. thesis Low Bit-Rate Image and Video Coding with Weighted Finite Automata. FIASCO is based on the theory of Weighted Finite Automata, indroduced by Karel Culik and Jarkko Kari several years ago. The lastest compression results show that WFA low bit-rate image compression clearly outperforms the JPEG image compression standard and is on a par with wavelet codecs like Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees by Amir Said and William A. Pearlman.
News
8/21/2000: There is a bug in the smoothing code of FIASCO: please use option --smooth=0 to encode video streams correctly.
