Pro Career
One of San Diego’s most interesting stories in 1998, Thelwell went from rookie free agent to practice squad to starting lineup for final two games in first season with Chargers. Originally drafted by San Francisco in seventh round of 1998 draft, Chargers scooped up Thelwell after he was released on final roster cut by 49ers. First came to attention of San Diego’s scouts and coaches during preseason practices with 49ers in Stockton, California. Finished season with 16 catches for 268 yards (16.8 avg.), long of 55 yards and one touchdown as rookie. Impressed Chargers enough through hard work in practice to be signed to active roster midway through season. Went on to start three of final six games, including last two contests in 1998. At 6-2, 188 pounds, Thelwell gives Chargers tall, fast receiver with big-play ability.

Saw action in six games with three starts as rookie with Chargers. Finished season with 16 catches for 268 yards (16.8 avg.), with long of 55 yards and one touchdown.
