Local Elections Results - 4th May 2000

The Liberal Democrat group retained control of the City Council at the local elections on 4 May, increasing their majority from 13 to 17 seats.

There were 19 seats (out of 55) up for election - 9 of them held by Liberal Democrats, 5 Conservative, 2 Labour and 3 Independents.

The Liberal Democrats gained three seats from the Conservatives (Compton & Shawford, St Bartholomew (Winchester) and Wonston) and the Conservatives gained one from the Liberal Democrats (New Alresford).

The turnout on polling day was 39.97% with the highest figure of 57.68% being recorded in the Droxford, Soberton & Hambledon ward.

The political make-up of the Council is now:

Liberal Democrat - 36 (was 34),
Conservative - 10 (12),
Labour - 4 (4) and
Independent - 5 (5)
