Assistant Professor Bjørn Smestad

(In Norwegian)

I have been working at Finnmark University College since August 1st, 1998, and am currently employed until July 31st, 2001.

My main project at the moment is a study of Norwegian textbooks in mathematics (for pupils aged 6-16), where I try to find out how history of mathematics is handled. I presented some of my findings at ICME-9 in Tokyo and HPM in Taipei:
History of mathematics in Norwegian textbooks and
The introduction of history of mathematics in Norwegian schools (both in pdf-format).

I am also planning a webpage on history of maths for schools (in Norwegian). This neverending project will be continuously updated.

Moreover, I have been working on a database of ideas for schools, which can be seen in a very early (and Norwegian) version. I doubt that I will have the time to do more about this project.

A list of my publications is available at Forskpub (still in Norwegian).

The course I am teaching is M1, an obligatory course in Norwegian teacher education.

I have a cand.scient. degree in mathematics (thesis in history of maths - in English) from the University of Oslo and have been teaching at the High School level before coming to Alta.

Bits and pieces

I am halfway in creating a Mathematical-etymological dictionary (in Norwegian) for my students. It will probably never be finished...

I am also working on a list of interesting www-resources for the same students (in Norwegian, but most of the sites listed are English).
