Formerly known as Super Mario RPG 2, Paper Mario will amaze gamers when it unfolds this winter.

With the release of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super NES, many gamers experienced a true Role Playing Game for the first time. Super Mario RPG gave gamers a fresh look at Mario's universe and slowly became a genuine classic. Even though Paper Mario has a new title, it delivers the same turn-based battles and intricate puzzles found in the original Super Mario RPG.

Paper Mario
Paper Mario uses a stationary camera which helps to solidify the storybook illusion
The most striking element of Paper Mario is the unique artistic style of the game world and characters. Whereas Yoshi's Story gave players a 3D look in a 2D game world, this game has a 2D look in a 3D world. As you can tell from these colorful screen shots, it is designed to make you feel like you've entered an animated pop-up book.

Paper-thin characters flip and flutter through Mushroom Kingdom, creating a refreshingly unique gaming experience. When Mario hops into bed to take a snooze, for example, he falls through air like a leaf dropping from a tree.

Paper Mario
Bowser was an ally in Super Mario RPG, and it looks like at least one Goomba is a good guy in this game
Just because Paper Mario looks like a living storybook, don't assume that the gameplay is just for kids. Like Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario contains a rich storyline, complex puzzles and strategic turn-based battles. Timed Attacks from the original game are back, which require gamers to move the Control Stick and press the A Button at precisely the right moment to inflict the maximum amount of damage. This battle configuration adds a new level of excitement to the repetitive nature of most RPGs.

Paper Mario
Once again, the Mario brothers embark on perilous journey
Paper Mario will feature an all-star cast of characters including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and Toad. We're hoping that old favorites from the original game like Mallow and Geno will at least make an appearance, but currently a complete line-up has not been confirmed. Without a doubt, Paper Mario will develop new characters and take gamers to never-before-seen corners of Mushroom Kingdom.

Paper Mario is scheduled to be released on December 26.
