BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- With their late-season swoon now a
distant memory, the New York Yankees go for the clincher with
Roger Clemens on the mound when they face the Oakland Athletics
in Game Four of the American League Division Series.
Orlando Hernandez added to his outstanding postseason resume,
tossing seven strong innings as New York drew within one victory
of the AL Championship Series with a 4-2 triumph in Game Three.
"El Duque" improved to 6-0 with a 1.24 ERA in the playoffs. With victories in Games Two and Three, the Yankees have put
their September slump behind them and are looking to advance to
the ALCS for the fourth time in five seasons. They went on to
win the World Series in 1996, 1998-99. Clemens (1-0, 6.00 ERA) looks to avenge a 5-3 loss to Oakland in
series opener. He yielded four runs and seven hits over six
innings on Tuesday, lowering his career postseason record to
3-4, including 1-1 in division series contests.
The A's hang their hopes of forcing a decisive Game Five on
rookie Barry Zito (7-4, 2.72). Zito exceeded expectations upon
joining Oakland in late July and was magnificent down the
stretch, posting a 5-1 mark in September. The 22-year-old lefthander made his only apearance against New
York on August 8 but did not factor in the decision. He turned
in a strong performance, yielding two runs -- one earned -- and
three hits over 6 1/3 frames in a 4-3 Yankees' victory. With a victory tonight, New York would clinch home-field
advantage in the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners, who swept
the Chicago White Sox in their division series. New York shortstop Derek Jeter is batting only .083 (1-for-12)
in the series but his lone hit plated two runs in Friday's win.
Center fielder Bernie Williams is batting .385 (5-for-13) but
has yet to drive in a run. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera fired two scoreless innings in
Friday's victory, extending his scoreless inning streak in the
postseason to 29 innings. After scoring five runs in its Game One victory, Oakland has
scored only two in the last two games. First baseman Jason
Giambi is batting .375 (3-for-8) but has not driven in a run.
Catcher Ramon Hernandez leads the club with three RBI and a .400
average (4-for-10).
