Scouting Report
1999 Season He doesn't own a Cy Young Award yet, but Kevin Millwood may be the Braves' best starter. In just his second full major league season, he led the majors by limiting opponents to a .202 batting average while ranking second in ERA. He proved to be a workhorse by averaging nearly seven innings per start and earned his first All-Star Game invitation. Against St. Louis on August 28, he became the first Brave since Frank LaCorte in 1976 to pitch 10 scoreless innings in one game.
Pitching slider, and took his game to the next level by bettering both his changeup and curveball. He keeps his pitches low in the strike zone and throws a heavy ball. Millwood gets stronger as the game progresses and flirted with no-hitters on three occasions last year. He also discovered success on the road after struggling away from Turner Field in 1998.
Defense & Hitting Though never a weak fielder, Millwood upgraded his glovework last season. While he made two errors, he did a better job of grabbing balls hit back through the box and showed improved quickness in getting off the mound to field bunts. The lone negative was that 13 of 17 basestealers succeeded with Millwood on the hill. He also enhanced his hitting, recording his first home run in the process.
2000 Outlook Millwood has won 38 games and recorded a 3.28 ERA since joining the rotation for good on August 30, 1997. It's scary to think that at age 25, he should get better for the next few years. His .690 career winning percentage already is the best among active pitchers with at least 50 decisions.
