McCall's Needlework & Crafts, Spring-Summer, 1972

QUICK to make of double crochet shells! Pants are seamless, have elastic waistband; tank top is trimmed with blue. Uses Dawn Knitting Worsted;

SIZES:
6-16 (click here for size charts). Directions for small size (6-8). Changes for medium size (10-12) and large size (14-16) are in parentheses.

Body Bust Size:
30-1/2" - 31-1/2" (32-1/2"-34"; 36"-38"). Blocked Bust Size: 33" (36"-38-1/2")

MATERIALS: Dawn Knitting Worsted, 4 ply, 8 (8-9) 4-oz. skeins green (G); 1 skein blue (B). Crochet hook size 8 or I. (Or English Size 7.) One yard 1/2" elastic.

GAUGE: 3 Sts = 1"; 9 rows = 5".

PANTS: RIGHT LEG: Beg at lower edge, with G, ch 68 (72-76); join with a sI st to form ring, being careful not to twist ch.
Rnd 1: Sc in each ch around. Do not join rnds; mark beg of rnd. Check gauge; rnd should measure 22-1/2" (24"-25-1/4") around.
Rnd 2: * Sk next 3 sc, shell of 4 dc in next sc, repeat from around--17 (18-19) shells.
Rnd 3: * Shell of 4 dc in sp between next 2 shells repeat from * around. Repeat rnd 3 until leg measures 28" from start or desired length to crotch. End sI st in first dc of next shell. End off.

LEFT LEG: Work same as right leg.

Join Legs: From right side, join G between 2nd (3rd-4th) shell and next shell on left leg, ch 3, shell of 4 dc in same sp, * shell of 4 dc in next sp, repeat from * 11 (12-13) times; sk 2 shells on right leg, work shell in sp between 2nd and 3rd shells, * shell in next sp, repeat from * 11 (12-13) times--26 (28-30) shells; join with a shell in top of starting ch-3. Work around in shell pat until piece measures 10" (10-1/2" - 11") above joining row or desired length from crotch, sI st in next dc. End off.

FINISHING: Weave crotch tog. Steam-press. Cut elastic to waist measurement; thread through top row of pants. Sew ends securely. Or, crochet a chain drawstring to run through waist.

TOP: BACK: Beg at lower edge, with B, ch 60 (60-68).
Row 1: Shell of 4 dc in 4th ch from hook, * sk next 3 ch, shell of 4 dc in next ch, repeat from * across--15 (15-17) shells. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2: * Shell of 4 dc in sp between next 2 shells, repeat from * across, end shell under turning ch--15 (15-17) shells. Check gauge; piece should measure 20" (20"-22-1/2") wide. Cut B; join G. With G, ch 4, turn. With G, repeat row 2 for pat until piece measures 10" from start. Ch 4, turn.

Dec Rows: Row 1: Shell of 3 dc in sp between next 2 shells, work in pat across, end 3 dc under turning ch. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2: 2 dc in sp between 3 dc and first complete shell, work in pat across, end 2 dc under turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Dc in sp between 2 dc and first complete shell, work in, pat across, end dc under turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 4: Shell of 4 dc in sp between next 2 complete shells, work in pat across, end shell of 4 dc in sp between last complete shell and dc--13 (13-15) shells. Ch 4, turn. Work even until piece measures 17" from start or desired length to underarm. Do not ch 4, turn.

Shape Armholes: SI st across first 8 dc (2 shells), ch 4, shell of 4 dc in sp between next 2 shells, repeat from * 8 (8-10) times (NOTE: I am not sure where the * is--this is typed exactly as written in the magazine.) -9 (9-11) shells. Ch 4 turn. Work 2 rows even. Cut G; join B. With B, work 2 rows even. Ch 4, turn.

Shape Neck: Row 1: Work 2 shells. Ch 4, turn. Repeat last row until armhole measures 7" (7-1/2"-7-1/2") above armhole shaping row. End off.
     Sk 5 (5-7) shells on last long row, join B in sp between last shell and next shell; ch 4, shell of 4 dc in sp between next 2 shells, shell under turning ch--2 shells. Complete same as first shoulder.

FRONT: First Half: Beg at lower edge, with B, ch 28 (32-32). Work as for back on 7 (8-8) shells for 9 rows; drop yarn.
2nd Half: Work as for first half for 9 rows; join with a sI st to top of turning ch-4 at beg of row 9 on first half. End off.

Joining Row: Next Row: With G on first half, ch 4, turn; work across first and 2nd halves--14 (16-16) shells. work same as for back to underarm--12 (14-14) shells.

Shape Armholes: Sl st across first 8 dc (2 shells), ch 4, shell of 4 dc in sp between next 2 shells, repeat from * 7 (9-9) times (NOTE: I am not sure where the * is--this is typed exactly as written in the magazine.) - 8 (10-10) shells. Work 2 rows even. Cut G; join B. With B, work 2 rows even. Ch 4, turn.

Shape Neck: Row 1 : Work 2 shells. Ch 4, turn. Work same as first shoulder on back. End off. Sk 4 (6-6) shells on last long row, join B in sp between last shell and next shell, work ch 4, shell of 4 dc in sp between next 2 shells, shell under turning ch--2 shells. Complete same as first shoulder.

FINISHING:
Steam-press pieces. Sew shoulder and side seams. From right side, with B, work 1 row sc around lower and front slit edges, being careful to keep work flat. From right side, with B, work 1 rnd sc around each armhole edge, holding in to desired fit. If necessary, work 1 rnd sc around neck edge, holding in to desired fit. Steam-press seams and edges lightly.
