Sizes:  Adult Small to fit 29-32; Medium to fit 33-36; Large to fit 37-39.

Child Small to fit 18-20 (Size 1-3); Medium to fit 22-24 (Size 4-6); Large to fit 25-27 (Size 8-12)

MATERIALS:
Adult - 1 each of 3 colors - 4 oz. pull- skeins Jack Frost Wintuk Knitting Worsted Type.
No, 9 Crochet Hook, No. 9 Knitting Needles for a solid back.
Child - 1 each of 3 colors - 2 oz. Jack Frost Sport Yarn No. 6 Crochet Hook
No. 6 Needles for a solid back.

NOTE:  Color A is the main color of the top. When there are three letters (as Color B, A, C) or three numbers (as 2, 3, 3), the first figure is for the small size, the second figure is for the medium size and the last figure is for the large size. Directions are given for a solid knit back, OR the back can be crocheted (identical to the front). The directions are the same for the adult and the child (the weight yarn, and the hook size will make the difference).

FRONT:  With Color A (A, A) Ch 3, join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc. in the ring; * Ch 2, 3 dc in the ring, repeat from the * twice, ending with ch 2, join with a slip stitch to the top of the ch 3. End off. Cut the yarn. Knot the two ends together and weave through the back of the work. Attach Color A, (A, A) to any ch 2 space.
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc under the ch 2 space, Ch 2, 3 dc under the same Ch 2 space, * Ch 2, 3 dc under the next Ch 2 space, Ch 2, 3 dc under the same Ch 2 space, repeat from the * twice, ending with Ch 2, join with a slip stitch to the top of the Ch 3. At the end of each round, knot the ends together and weave in. Attach Color B, (B, 8) to any Ch 2 corner space.
Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc under the Ch 2 corner space, Ch 2, 3 dc under the same Ch 2 corner space, * Ch 2, 3 dc under the next Ch 2 space, Ch 2, 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc under the corner space, repeat from the * twice, ending with Ch 2, 3 dc under the next Ch 2 space, Ch 2, join with a slip stitch to the top of the ch 3. Attach color C (C, B) to any Ch 2 corner space.
Round 4: Ch 3, (2 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc) under the corner space, * Ch 2, 3 dc under the next Ch 2 space, Ch 2, 3 dc under the next Ch 2 space, Ch 2, (3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc) under the corner space, repeat from the * twice, ending with Ch 2, 3 dc under the next Ch 2 space, Ch 2, 3 dc under the next Ch 2 space, Ch 2, join with a slip stitch to the top of the Ch 3. Attach color A, (C, C) to any Ch 2 corner space.
Round 5:  Continuing in established pattern, work Round 5 with Color A (C, C). Piece will measure about 4-1/2 inches wide for the child, and 6 inches wide for the adult.
Round 6:  Work with color B (A, C). Small size will end off, go to Round 9.
Round 7:  Color A for the medium and large size, Medium size will end off, go to Round 9.
Round 8: Color A for the large size only.
Round 9: Attach Color B (B, 6) to any Ch 2 corner space. Ch 3, work even in established pattern across one side only to the corner space, 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the corner space; (do not chain), 1 dc in each of the 3 dc of the corner, * 1 dc under the Ch 2 space, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, repeat from the * to the next corner space,  dc under the Ch 2 space, 1 dc in each of the 3 dc of the corner, 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the corner space, Ch 2, work even in the established pattern across the next side to the corner space, 3 dc, Ch 2, 3 dc in the corner space; (do not Ch), 1 dc in each of the 3 dc of the corner, repeat between the *'s to the last corner space, 1 dc under the Ch 2 space, 1 dc in each of the 3 dc of the corner join with a slip stitch to the top of the Ch 3. (This is the bottom left corner).

Left Strap:
Attach Color B (B, B) to the next corner over from where round 9 was ended off.
Row 1: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 6 dc.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in the 2nd dc, 1 dc in each dc to the end, 1 dc in the top of the turning Ch.
Repeat Row 2 until the strap measures 4 inches for the adult size, about 2, 2, 21/2 inches for the child's size. End off. Work other strap to correspond.

Sides: Attach Color C (B, B) to the bottom left corner.
Row 1: Ch 3, (working up the left side) *1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 1 dc under the Ch 2, repeat from the * up the side, NOT working across the last 3 groups of 3 dc,
Left Armhole: Row 2: With Color C (C, C) Ch 3, turn, skip the 2nd dc for a decrease, 1 dc in the 3rd dc, 1 dc in each remaining dc, 1 dc in the top of the turning Ch.
Row 3: With Color A (C, C) Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in the 2nd dc, 1 dc in each remaining dc, do not work in the turning Ch (for a decrease).
Row 4: With Color A (A, A) repeat Row 2. Small size end off.
Row 5: With Color A (A) repeat Row 3. End off.
Right Armhole: Attach Color C (B, B) to the Ch 2 space after the 3rd group of dc. Ch 3, working down the right side, * 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 1 dc under the Ch 2, repeat from the * down the side, working 1 dc under the Ch 2 corner space.
Row 2: With Color C (C, C) repeat Row 3 (of the left armhole).
Row 3: With Color A (C, C) repeat Row 2 (of the left armhole).
Row 4: With Color A (A, A) repeat Row 3 (of the left armhole). Small size end off.
Row 5: With Color A (A) repeat Row 2. End off.

Bottom: Attach Color B to the bottom right corner (at the last row of Color A).
Row 1: Ch 3, working across, 1 dc under the last stitch of the last row, * 2 dc under the last stitch of the next row, repeat from the * 2 (3, 3) times, 1 dc under the corner Ch 2, 1 dc in each dc across the row, 1 dc under the corner Ch 2, * 2 dc under the last stitch of the next row, repeat from the * 3, (4, 4) times.
Row 2: With Color A. Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in the 2nd dc, 1 dc in each dc across, 1 dc in the top of the turning Ch. Repeat Row 2 for the pattern.
Row 3: Use Color A.
Rows 4 and 5: Use Color B.
Rows 6 and 7: Use Color C. End off.

For an open crochet back, work the same as the front.

Closed Knit Back: With Color A, cast on 68, (78, 82) stitches. Row 1: K 1, P 1, in ribbing across the row. Repeat Row 1 until the piece measures the same length as the front to the bottom of the armhole. Always keeping the ribbed pattern, bind off 4 (5, 6) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Armholes: Decrease 1 stitch each side every row until 42, 48, 52 stitches remain. Work even until the armhole measures 1 inch above the top of the front square for the adult, and the same length as the front square for the child. Work across 1 0 stitches, bind off the center 22 (28, 32) stitches, work across the last 1 0 stitches. Attach another piece of yarn, and working on both sides at once, work even in ribbing until the piece measures the same length as the front. Bind off.
