McGerrigle's gold ties record
(Aug 5) Canada's tally of gold medals at the Pan Am games reached a milestone
today thanks to Miel McGerrigle.
The weightlifter from Vancouver, B.C, won a gold medal in the women's 63-kilogram
class, bringing the Canada's gold total to 48. The number ties a record set in 1995 at the
Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
The 21-year-old lifted a total of 195 kilograms in the clean and jerk and snatch events for the win in
the combined victory.
In other events, boxer Scott McIntosh of Sydney, N.S., locked at least a silver medal after beating Jamaica's Sean Black in the
71-kilogram semifinal. The 25-year-old will square off against Cuba's Jorge Gutierrez for the gold
medal on Saturday night.
