In recent years the SGHS MS has increased its efforts to compile a guidebook, which could both Slovak and foreign, free-lanced as well as professional genealogists offer a comprehensive, practical information on how to do genealogical research in Slovakia and related areas. For this purpose the Society has addressed more than three tens of Slovak and foreign authors (genealogists, heraldists, historians and archivists), the cooperation of which would be resulted in a detailed guide, first ever published in Slovakia.
The information will cover not only the territory of
Slovakia but the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Ukraine, Germany,
Croatia, Yugoslavia, Romania, USA and Canada as well. It will bring information
on sources useful in genealogical research, about their maintenance in
particular archives, their information value, methods how to use the information
offered, how to develop them etc. Most of the information will be published
for the first time.
The book is to comprise 45 chapters, a lot of illustrations (depictions
of documents) and indexes.
The main text will be written in Slovak, each chapter will be summarized
in English.
The book is to appear in the year 2000.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
The edition of such a book is a rather costly project
and you can help us to realize it.
How can you contribute?
The book will contain a lot of original illustrations. Besides, we
would like to publish some family portraits (with short genealogical comments).
If you have such materials (genealogical works, photographies etc.), they
are very welcome. Even if we did not chose anything of your materials,
they would not be lost. They will become a part of our archives and serve
to further researchers.
Another big issue we face is how to gain funds to publish such an expensive
book. We used to ask for help various foundations, however, in these days,
when all our society has serious economic problems, it is very difficult
to get positive responses from these potential donors. Thus, we decided
to ask for help you, our colleagues, friends and distant relatives (mainly
from the USA). Even symbolic donations (10, 15, 20 USD) are welcome. We
shall appreciate all donations, irrespective of their amount (all donors
will be listed in the book).
Donations can be sent by a check payable to Slovak Genealogical-Heraldic
Society at the Matica slovenská (Please, call us to the fact, that this
is your donation to our genealogical guide).
Thank you very much for any support.
