One of seven Nebraska natives, Blanchard Johnson played
for Coach Ken Schreiber at St. Albert High School in Council
Bluffs, Iowa, but was born and lives in Omaha. Johnson played
middle linebacker and running back, rushing for 1,929 yards
and 35 career touchdowns in his prep career. He also had 450
career tackles and as a senior rushed for 1,928 yards and 35
TDs (both school records) in 11 games and had 151 tackles and
nine quarterback sacks. St. Albert finished the season 10-1
in 1998 and made the state quarterfinals after going 8-1 in
Johnsons sophomore and junior years in Class 2A. Johnson
earned all-region honors by PrepStar as a senior and earned
first-team all-state all-class honors in Iowa on defense. He
was a two year Class 2A all-state player on defense. His senior
year, he was the city player of the year and the Iowa Class
2A Co-Player of the Year. In 1997, Johnson saw limited action
as he suffered a high ankle sprain early on then a compound
fracture of his right leg in the regular-season finale. A four-sport
standout, Johnson qualified for the state wrestling meet as
a freshman and sophomore and is 30-0 wrestling at 189 pounds
this season. He was an all-state catcher on the summer baseball
team and has earned three letters in track, placing fifth in
the state meet in the 100 meters as a sophomore. His best 100-meter
time is 10.8 seconds. Johnson attended Husker camps and has
been a regular at games attending with his grandparents, George
and Pat Riza of Omaha. He is the first St. Albert High School
athlete to earn a scholarship at Nebraska. The son of Liz and
Blanchard Johnson, Jr., Blanchard III was born on May 30, 1981
in Omaha. He intends to major in business at Nebraska. Johnson
only visited Nebraska, but was also recruited by Iowa, Iowa
State, Michigan and Wyoming. He said, I was very comfortable
at Nebraska. I felt I could be more motivated and have the ability
to reach my full potential at Nebraska.
