1999 Recruiting Class
Spencer Owen
Fr....RE...6-5...235...Carrollton, Mo....Carrollton H.S....
Coached by Stan Kee, Spencer Owen was a standout offensive and defensive lineman at Carrollton High School in Missouri, where he was a starter for three and a half years on defense. He is one of two Missouri recruits to commit to Nebraska this year (also John Garrison) and is expected to be a rush end for the Huskers. Owen was listed No. 29 in SuperPrep’s Midland’s Top 71 team and earned all-region honors by PrepStar as a senior. He was a three-time all-conference player, two-time all-district and in 1998 earned first-team all-state honors as an offensive lineman. Playing in Class 2A (of five classes), Carrollton went 7-4 in 1998 and was the district champion and went undefeated in conference action in 1997 posting a 12-1 record. He had 113 tackles as a senior (73 solos) with six fumble recoveries, two pass breakups, five blocked kicks, 16 sacks and one forced fumble. In his career he totaled 229 tackles (177 solo) with 36 sacks, eight fumble recoveries and five PBU. He also qualified for the state track meet the last two years and was the Class 2A shot put champion as a junior (best of 53’) and finished third in the discus as a junior (best of 151’). He is a member of DECA and SADD and enjoys lifting, hunting and farming. He plans to major in either physical education or agribusiness. A Nebraska football camp attendee, Owen only visited Nebraska and Kansas State, but was also recruited by Missouri, Kansas and Texas A&M. The son of Ruth and the late Weldon Owen, Spencer was born on Aug. 2, 1980. He said the coaching staff was a deciding factor for him. “I really liked the coaching staff, particularly Charlie McBride. Nebraska has such a great tradition and fan support that overall, there really is no comparison.”
