Everclear's Art Alexakis Starts His Own Label
Art Alexakis--from rock star to record company geek? Everclear's main man isn't about to give up his writing, recording, and performing, mind you, but he is starting his own record label, Popularity Recordings. The twist: it will be distributed by another major label, not by Capitol Records, which releases Everclear's albums.
"It'll cause some tension," Alexakis acknowledges, though he's quick to add that Everclear will remain on Capitol. "I love the business," the singer says of his decision to branch out. "I think it's fun. I like all those other aspects that come with making the records . . . And I think it would be fun to work with other bands."
Alexakis doesn't have much time to get Popularity up and running at the moment, however. He's on the road with Everclear promoting the trio's new album, So Much for the Afterglow, the highly anticipated follow-up to 1995's unexpectedly platinum Sparkle and Fade. "We used the same criteria we had on the last record; we wanted to make a record we thought was perfect for the time," Alexakis says. "I'm sure subconsciously we felt like we had to come up with something that was as good or better, at least in our own minds. Nobody was pushing us like, 'Okay, you guys have got to come through.' We just assumed that we would, and I feel like we did." --Gary Graff
