INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Gilbert and Sullivan Archive, which is devoted to the operas and other works of William S. Gilbert and Arthur S. Sullivan. The Archive, which was established in September 1993, includes a variety of G&S related items, including clip art, librettos, plot summaries, pictures of the original G&S stars, song scores, midi and mpeg audio files (which allow you to actually listen to the music), and newsletter articles. New items are being added regularly.

This is the "home" site for all Gilbert and Sullivan related activities on the Internet. Links from the Archive lead to many other G&S sites, and to other opera and arts related Internet sites. Please let us know if there are any other sites you think we should link to.

Submissions to the Archive are welcomed. Send a note to Jim jmfarron@vais.net to make arrangements for your contribution.

WHAT'S NEW

-- Helga Perry has posted a number of early periodical reviews of G&S operas in the Severnside Theatre Ensemble Collection.
Added November 27, 2000

-- Our newest Web Opera is The Foresters. Alfred Tennyson wrote this verse play, subtitled "Robin Hood and Maid Marian", at the request of the America theatre manager Augustin Daly in 1892. Daly, who had met Sullivan in California, asked him to write the music and Sullivan composed the nine short numbers which comprise the score. The Web Opera of this rarity not only includes midi files of the entire score, but also the score itself in downloadable form, all provided to the Archive by Paul Howarth.
Added November 23, 2000

-- Thanks to Ed Patterson we now have two midi files of music from The Nautch Girl, the first opera at the Savoy Theatre not written by Gilbert and Sullivan, but closely patterned after their style. More midi files from this opera will be coming soon.
Added November 20, 2000

-- This year, with Christmas season fast approaching, we are featuring Christmas music by Sir Arthur Sullivan. Paul Howarth has given us the scores and midi files for eight songs — four original carols by Sullivan, three arrangements of traditional songs, and an anthem written for Advent. With the ready availabililty of the scores for downloading, we hope that you will considering using some of these songs for your Christmas concerts, or will urge your church to use them this Christmas season.
Added October 31, 2000

-- Helga Perry has provided us with (1) information on obtaining the Broude Brothers scholary edition of the Trial by Jury score, and (2) information on obtaining the score for the lost HMS Pinafore song Reflect My Child, which was reconstructed by Helga and Bruce I. Miller.
Added October 28, 2000

-- Quade Winter has provided us with a midi file of the original introduction to Act II of The Sorcerer. Quade also has available orchestra parts for this piece.
Added October 25, 2000
