All Linux distributors make the source code available at no cost, whether on the distribution CD or on a Web site. This means that Linux can be customized and optimized. But beyond having source code and the ability to recompile the kernel to optimize its performance, the nature of Linux itself—not unlike other variants of Unix—provides for the type of customizability and flexibility that other operating environments would envy. Whether the Internet appliance is a Web server, a gateway, or a Web client, Linux can be tuned for the application.
