Galatasaray SK 3 - 2 AS Monaco
Tue 12 September 20:45
Ali Sami Yen Stadi, Istanbul

Turks triumph in thriller

Galatasaray SK had Gheorghe Hagi sent off 20 minutes from time at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Istanbul, but still managed to get their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a successful start with a 3-2 win against AS Monaco in the First Group-Match Stage.

Decisive goal
The decisive goal was scored 10 minutes from time with a diving header from the Brazilian Capone, who had earlier given away a penalty. Galatasaray had established a two-goal half-time lead through Hagi when the Romanian scored with a typically outrageous strike from 30 metres.
But Monaco forced their way back into the game to level with a splendid goal from Shabani Nonda, the successor to David Trézéguet, and a penalty from the Marco Simone, following a foul by Capone. But with tempers becoming frayed following the sending-off of Hagi and Monaco's Oussmane Dabo and Monaco on the point of scoring a fine away point, Capone scored his dramatic late winner.
