LOCH NESS MONSTER

If you like knitting toys, you will really enjoy this one. He is a very friendly Loch Ness Monster and the children will love him. He can also be knitted without the hat and scarf to make a dinosaur. The toy is knitted in Sirdar Country Style Double Knitting.

MEASUREMENTS
Measurements Approx. 25cm. (10 inches) high and 30cm. (12 inches) long when complete.

MATERIALS
1 50g. ball of Sirdar Country Style Double Knitting in main colour. Small quantities of double knitting in green for beret and scarf, and red for tongue and bobbles.
1 pair of 3 3/4 mm (US5) knitting needles.
Stuffing.
Felt for eyes.

TENSION
24 sts. and 32 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) on the specified needles over st.st.

BODY RIGHT SIDE
Cast on 30 sts.
Beg. with a P. row, work in st.st.
Work 1 row.
Inc. 1 st. at each end of next and every alt. row until there are 40 sts.
Work 1 row.
Inc. 1 st. at each end of next and every 4th row until there are 52 sts.
Work 3 rows.

Divide for neck and tail
lst row Inc. in first st., K. 10, cast off 2 sts., K.26 including st. already on needle, cast off 3 sts., K.9 including st. already on needle, inc. in last st.
Work on last group of 11 sts. for tail.
Work 3 rows.
5th row K.2 tog., K.8, inc. in last st.
Work 3 rows.
9th row K.2 tog. twice, K.6, inc. in last st.
Work 5 rows.
15th row K.2 tog. twice, K.5, inc. in last st.
Work 9 rows.
25th row K.2 tog. twice, K. to last st., inc.
Work 5 rows.
Rep. last 6 rows until 4 sts. rem.

Work hump
With W.S. facing, rejoin yarn to centre 26 sts.
Beg. with a P. row, work 3 rows, dec. 1 st. at each end of each row (20 sts.).
Dec. 1 st. at each end of next and every alt. row until 10 sts. rem.
Work 1 row.
Dec. 1 st. at each end of next and foll. 4th row (6 sts.).
Cast off.

Work neck and head
With W.S. facing, rejoin yarn to rem. 12 sts.
Beg. with a P. row, work 9 rows.
10th row K.2 tog., K. to last st., inc.
Work 7 rows.
18th row K. to last st., inc.
Work 3 rows.
22nd row Inc. in first st., K.4, (inc. in next st., K. 1) 4 times.

4th row K.2, M.1., * K.4, M.1., rep. from * ending K.2 (50 sts.).
K. 3 rows.
8th row K.2, M.1 ., * K.5, M.1., rep. from * ending K.3 (60 sts.).
K. 9 rows.
18th row * K.2 tog., K.6, rep. from * to last 4 sts., K.2 tog., K.2.
K. 1 row.
20th row K. 1, K.2 tog., * K.5, K.2 tog., rep. from * to end of row.
K. 1 row.

Break yarn and thread through rem. sts. Draw up tightly and seam to cast-on edge.

TO MAKE UP
Join body sections from cast-on edge to cast-off sts. for mouth. Sew cast-on edge of head gusset at lower front edge of mouth and join on either side of cast-off sts., keeping single P. row at inner edge. Sew next section to nose section, folding it at P. ridge which forms outer edge. Sew rest of gusset to either side of head sections, ending half way down inner side of neck. Join rest of body down neck, along hump, up tail, and down to cast-on edge.
Stuff, then seam lower edge. Fold each leg in half and seam, stuffing before sewing along cast-on edge.
Sew one leg to front and back on either side.
Make bobbles for scarf and beret.
Sew eyes in place.

Tongue
Using red, cast on 8 sts. Cast off.
Sew to back of mouth.
