December sees a new route for DigiGuide, moving from advertising sponsored software to paid-for software.
Within the next week you will be automatically upgraded to this new version and due to this significant change of approach, one that affects you as a user, we feel that it deserves an explanation.
There were several reasons why this new approach was undertaken and we have tried to explain our reasons below...
Problems that cannot be resolved: There have been significant difficulties with all offline/online advertising solutions that we have tried and there comes a time when the law of diminishing returns starts to hold true. We have spent a large amount of time and effort on resolving all of the reported issues but we have been unsuccessful.
Bad press and bad consumer view: Advertising solutions of any type or origin have had a lot of bad press over the last year. No matter what solution we produce the same bad press will follow us around. This is very unfortunate but there simply is nothing that can be done about it. Advertising solutions for offline applications need certain functions and those functions will always upset certain groups.
Overwhelming popularity: The registered version has been extremely popular, much more so than we anticipated. This is only going to continue as we bring more features into the registered only version. We have seen an increased number of sales over the last 6 weeks and this is a clear signal that people know that DigiGuide represents good value for money.
Having half of our users registered and half of them not, means we have a significantly lower return from the advertising - again, giving more impetus to removing the advertising altogether.
The final deciding factor for us was one of distributing DigiGuide. We wanted to encourage PC manufactures and ISPs to distribute DigiGuide. A traditional approach is to offer a revenue share. Advertising returns are too variable to offer a concrete revenue share but registration fees can be fixed and a revenue share that represents a reasonable return can be agreed. With this new capability we can also offer every user the opportunity to earn some money for themself by distributing DigiGuide for us!
The new DigiGuide will be fully featured. It will have NO adverts and will NOT have any limitations. The incentive to register will come by way of a traditional, but very effective, registration window which is periodically displayed. If you are happy with this window displaying at certain periods then you can carry on using DigiGuide for as long as you like.
Lastly, we believe that the amazingly low price of £4.99 per year is the right price and therefore this will remain for the foreseeable future. We feel that at this price there really are no barriers to becoming a registered user.
