Date Of Birth?

Place Of Birth?
Dandenong, Victoria

What’s our earliest musical memory?
When I used to listen to the Party Boys song ‘He’s gonna step on you again’ (’87), I used to get two big fat sticks and in my makeshift cubbyhouse in Mum and Dad’s garage roof, I’d belt them as hard as I could on a wooden roof beam in time with the song – kinda tribal drumming I suppose?

Who would you say has been most influential to you as a musician?
Lee Rocker – double bass player from The Stray Cats – there was this video of a Stray Cats concert in Tokyo and at the start they show Lee do about a one minute sound check by himself, with close ups on his hands and that is how I learned what to do with my right hand – slap. Chris pretty much showed me where to put my left fingers to start with. He taught me 12 bar blues.

How long have you been playing bass?
Seven years.

Do you play any other instruments?
I used to play piano and I can play a few guitar chords.

Who are your favourite bands?
I like The Stray Cats, Reverend Horton Heat, Midnight Oil, The Clash, The Jam, Green Day, Sublime, Bodyjar, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Rancid, The Beatles, Supergrass.

What’s the best part about being in a band?
The best part is not having a 9-5 job. I’m hopeless at getting up early every morning.

What’s the worst?
Being away from home alot. Don’t get me wrong, I love being on tour a lot, but I miss family and friends. Catch 22.

What would you do if you weren’t a musician anymore?
Probably something in the music industry. Music is the only art I’m really interest in and actually have a passion for. Maybe a producer in a studio, or I wouldn’t mind running a pub with bands on every night. I’m pretty passionate about pubs too!?

What sort of gear do you use?
I use two Gallien Krueger amplifiers. I have a magnetic (electric) pick-up on my bass, that goes through the 800RB amp into an Ampeg speaker box with eight 10 inch speakers in it and I have an acoustic pick-up on the back of my fingerboard which goes through the 400RB amp into a Yorkville speaker box, which has two 10 inch speakers in it. My bass is an Eberhard Miener bass made in Germany. My old bass is a Czechoslovakian piece of crap.

What made you choose to play upright bass?
Being an absolutely huge rockabilly fan, all the bands I used to listen to had a slap bass and I can’t pinpoint the original attraction. I guess I just wanted to play with Chris and we figured it’s easier to find a drummer than a double bass player, so I took it up! When I first started to go and see rockabilly gigs, I used to love watching slap-bass players. I also like the appeal of something a bit different and more challenging.

What’s your favourite book?
My favourite books are by British comedian Ben Elton. I like Jonathan Livingstone Seagull too – hippie book! I don’t read much.

What’s your favourite movie?
Equal favourites –Grease, Blues Brothers.

What’s your favourite venue?
The Esplanade Hotel, St Kilda.

Who would you most like to play with? Why?
The Stray Cats – because they have been one of my most most most favourite bands of all time – one of those bands that changes your life and I’d love to jam with them.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Probably the tour we did with Bodyjar and the one with Jebediah because that was when crowds all around Australia really started to respect what we are doing.

What would you say has been your best show?
Crash ‘n’ Burn in Brisbane at the Bad Religion after party. I can’t remember much of it at all, but I remember it just seemed to gel and we went pretty damn nuts. I remember ending up with about eight blisters and Trav breaking about twenty sticks – fun.

Is image important in music?
For sure. I like it when you can hear a song and automatically be sure exactly what the band would look like. It’s cool to be able to appreciate a whole package concept in a band, as well as just the music.

If you could be anyone else for a day, who would it be?
Maybe I’d go back in time and be Conan the Barbarian. He’s buffed, he always gets the princess-like figure and he can kill whole armies single handedly. And he’s a movie star and probably filthy rich. I’d definitely lose the locks though!
