Super Bowl I Photos
The Super Bowl was Born June 8, 1966. Or, more accurately, on that day, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle announced the creation of the game that would become known as the Super Bowl.
How the Super Bowl Was Born
In 1960, The American Football League was created to challenge the NFL. Over the years, other leagues had come and gone in an attempt to match the NFL’s success. The AFL held its own championship game from 1960 to 1969, as well as its own college draft that lured some top players away from the NFL. Recognizing that cooperation would be better than competition, the NFL and AFL began to discuss a merger between the two leagues.
