Mayor authorizes ownership group to proceed

Durham, NC - The Northern League has approved an expansion baseball franchise to begin play in Gary, Indiana in June of 2002. "The Northern League's approval of a franchise for Gary puts us much closer to professional baseball," said Mayor Scott King. The league's approval is subject to certain conditions, including confirmation of final ownership of the team and the league's approval of the City's stadium plans and lease.

The Northern League's board of directors met in Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday, January 13, 2001 with Northwest Sports Venture, LLC ("NSV"), an entity which Mayor King authorized to be formed to bring baseball to Gary. "We are excited about league expansion into Northwest, Indiana," said Miles Wolff, League Commissioner. Wolff, former publisher of Baseball America and former owner of the Durham Bulls, has been Commissioner of the Northern League since its formation in 1993. "NSV's presentation convinced the league that the City and its proposed ownership group will make a great addition to the league," said Wolff. With the granting of the franchise to NSV for Gary, NSV is now in a position to accept investors.

"I expect that NSV will consist of both local Gary citizens interested in investing in the franchise and individuals with professional sports development, marketing and management experience," said King. NSV will be responsible for raising the funds necessary to purchase the franchise and operate the team.

A representative of NSV, Tim Haffner, was delighted with the action taken by the Northern League. "The Northern League and Northwest Indiana will be a great fit for each other. Within the next few weeks, we will be working hard to satisfy the league's expectations and the completion of the team's ownership group."

The Northern League is an independent baseball league with 14 teams in 9 states and two Canadian Provinces, including: Schaumburg, Illinois; St. Paul, Minnesota; Sioux City, Iowa; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Fargo, North Dakota; Winnipeg, MB; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Duluth, Minnesota. Joliet, Illinois and Gary, Indiana would be the 9th and 10th teams in the Northern League's Central Division. The Northern League is America's most successful and well established independent professional baseball league. Teams play a 90-game schedule with 45 home games. The season commences in late May, and ends labor day weekend.
