Welcome
to the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program from The Wichita
Eagle
NIE
is a cooperative effort between Kansas schools and The
Wichita Eagle to bring the newspaper into the classroom.
NIE offers a variety of exciting programs designed
to improve reading, writing and critical thinking skills among
elementary, middle and high school students. The integration
of newspapers in the classroom allows teachers access to the
most current news and information on a variety of topics.
When
newspapers are incorporated in the school curriculum, students
have the opportunity to relate learning to real life situations.
Newspapers have often been called the "living textbook",
and through the NIE program, students are introduced
to a life-long reading habit. Because the newspaper is an
adult reading material, it is often more motivational as a
teaching tool than the regular textbook. Many studies have
shown students improve their reading and writing skills as
a result of using the newspaper in the classroom.
