The Post 1963 Catalogue ("The F's")
It is likely the dominance of Airfix in the kit market made Frog take the decision to produce constant scale models. Prior to 1963 Frog had apparantly viewed each kit indivdually with respect to what was the most suitable scale, which resulted in wide variety of scales. So in 1963 Frog launched what is generally refered to as the third generation of non flying scale models. These where now made to the universally accepted scale of 1/72. This was a scale more or less pioneered by Airfix, and as such is a testament to Airfix dominance in the construction kit market that this scale became the benchmark it did. Quite obviously not all the kits produced from 1963 on, where to 1/72, Ships and cars still continued to be issued to somewhat erratic scales. The R100 was produced to the more managable scale of 1/500. However, the only large scale aeroplane models produced where the ex Hasagewa 1/32 range.
Technically speaking the new constant scale models where originally introduced in to the "P" range but by early 1964 the "P" suffix was dropped and the "F" prefixes introduced (hence the identification of this section as the "F's" as it (almost) neatly draws the the line between the two sets of kits) this is the way things remained until Frog ceased production in 1976.
Intially some of the "P" series where re-numbered with "F" prefixes and apart from the constant scale kits that where previously on catalogue and some of the ship kits, most "P" kits soon disapeared. There was a variety of box styles during the next 12 years. The logo style was changed in 1974 to the rather less eyecatching (typical of the period - '70's) version. there was also a number of different series, the most notable was the Trail Blazer series. There where a variety of promotional aids the highest profile being the gold tokens scheme.
Collectors Note: Basically you have everything here, from the very rare to the most common. Generally the early packaging seems to be the most sought after, although this is'nt allways the rarest, for instance the four new kits listed in the final catalogue where only produced for a few months and in the case of the Lancaster and B 17 a matter of weeks. Some kits where produced in three of four variations of packaging and the later ones somtimes being far rarer than than earlier incarnations.
We have devised a value guide, to give a indication of respective rarity against each entry, the price range against each kit is for a truly mint example, to qualify for this rating the kit must be complete in every respect with no detoriation to the kit in any manner whatsoever and should include everything it would have been originally despatched with, the packaging should be in the same condition. If a kit or packaging is in any lesser condition we believe a discount should apply, the larger the defect, the larger the discount that should be applied. It should be also remembered that, value is subjective "One mans meat, is another mans poison" and no matter how rare a individual kit maybe, if no one wants it is worthless, on the other hand if more than two people want what is apparently the most common of kits the price may get inflated over what is normally excepted. What is listed below should be treated as a guide and should not be relied on as being absolutely authoritative. You have been warned:-)
