examining lives of gay, lesbian teachers, students and ex-students in schools found:
67% experienced verbal harassment
30% experienced actual physical violence
Around 11% of students reported a teacher as the perpetrator of anti-gay or anti-lesbian harassment.
62% of perpetrators (in entire sample) were aged between 15-18 years and 23% between 10 -14 years.
The perpetrators in 71% (entire sample) of incidents involved males only, 22% females only and 4% males and females.
69% (students) of respondents did not report the incident because they believed that:
the school wouldn’t do anything about the incident
the school would be hostile and unsupportive
the incident would not be taken seriously
43 of the students had felt like leaving school citing homophobia as the major reason.
Only 9% of trainee teachers and teachers/ex-teachers reported lesbian and gay anti-violence attitudes were taught at their school.
Males experienced a higher incidence of anti-gay verbal harassment, threats of violence and physical violence than females. (Griffin, J. (1994) – Schoolwatch Report)
