John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
Low price regional petrol station chains include Beacon, Maverick and Trailside (all in parts of the West). Many small local chains and independent petrol stations offer lower prices than the big national and international brands.
Petrol prices vary quite considerably from region to region.
We recorded some petrol prices during our holiday to the USA in May and June 1999, as follows.
California US$1.40 Colorado US$1.16 Idaho US$1.23 New Mexico US$1.27 Nevada US$1.25 Oregon US$1.35 Utah US$1.26 Washington State US$1.26 Wyoming US$1.11

|---|---|---|---|
| Tri-Cities, Washington State (Richland, Kennewick and Pasco) | "Currently at the AM/PM (Arco) stores which are the least expensive here the price is $1.42" | Lauri J | |
| Fort Myers, Florida | $1.42 to $1.51 | Napoleon | |
| Brooklyn, New York City | Regular $1.65, Silver $1.75, Ultimate $1.79 | Lenny Kushnirskiy | |
| Duluth, Georgia (35 miles northeast of Atlanta) | "Currently around $0.3597 per litre. Note: at this time gas prices are continuing to go up about once or twice per week. At this time in 1999 gas here was at $0.2089 per litre. This some of the least expensive gas in the US. Gas is more expensive in areas with fewer gas stations. We have a lot of gas stations here so the prices remain low on the national scale. It is rumoured that gas here will probably hit $1.47 per gallon in August 2000 and then the prices will start to drop again." | Chris Paque | |
| San Antonio, Texas | Ranges from $1.25 to $1.35 a gallon for Regular. | Meg | |
| Milwaukee, Wisconsin | $1.49 | Chris Kreidl | |
| Sunnyvale, California (about 40 miles south of San Francisco) | $1.899 "Worst in the nation!" | Tim Showalter | |
| Temecula, California (about halfway between San Diego and Riverside on the I-15 Freeway) | $1.73 | Chris Mauricio | |
| Warsaw, Indiana | "I paid $1.49 per gallon (87-octane) today at a Phillips-66 (brand-name) gas station. Gas prices in northern Indiana can diverge quite a bit, by as much as 7-10 cents per gallon within a distance of 50 miles. Travellers arriving in Chicago and using the I-80/90 expressway into Indiana should ALWAYS expect to see gas prices roughly 10-15 cents higher per gallon at the toll-plazas along I-80/90. I-80/90 is a 'toll-road'. The farther you drive, the more you pay. Since you can't readily leave the highway without paying at the exit, the plazas enroute have higher prices on everything from gasoline to snack foods." | William Blum | |
| Jefferson City, Missouri | "Gasoline prices have recently hit $1.50/gallon - nearly intolerable by our standards!" | Seth Verdot | |
| Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | "Gas prices just went up here. Currently (Apr-10-2000) prices here are $1.539/gallon for low-grade (87 octane), $1.639/gallon for mid-grade (89 octane), and $1.739/gallon for high-grade (93 octane). These prices are from a BP (British Petroleum) station nearby and are typical of the prices of major national chains in the area (discount chains are slightly [$.02-$.10/gallon] lower). | "Slenser" | |
| Memphis, Tennessee | Regular unleaded $1.42/gallon - "Prices are estimated to top out around $1.55 per gallon by the middle of summer, and then decline after that due to increased OPEC production" | Ben Carter | |
| Pacific Northwest | "Up here in the Pacific Northwest, fuel has become increasingly expensive over the past several months. Some of the more expensive chains in the more expensive areas have actually broken $2 (!!!) per gallon." | Stomp | |
| Kansas City, Missouri | $1.24/gallon for 87 octane, the lowest grade | Kirk Uhlmann | |
| Bolingbrook, Illinois (a western suburb of Chicago) | "Gas prices have dropped over the last week and I purchased self serve regular for $1.499 today at a Speedway chain." | Jim Emkow | |
| Detroit, Michigan | From memory, around $1.35 | Stan Webb | |
| Chicago, Illinois | "$1.52. In Chicago I find Thorntons garages pretty competitive - or Citgo of course" | Stan Webb | |
| Seattle and Tacoma, Washington State | "Recent gas prices in Seattle and Tacoma varied from $1.56 to $1.70 US gallon cheapest unleaded." | Stan Webb | |
| Woodridge, Illinois (a western suburb of Chicago) | "Our gasoline prices are up again. This evening, the station near me, which is a local off-brand, posted $1.63/gallon. High for us, when we were used to about $1.25/gallon for quite a while. Some places in prime locations, such as along the Interstates and in Chicago proper are higher." | Dave Krupka | |
| Miller County, Missouri (east of Lake of the Ozarks and south of the capital, Jefferson City) | "About $1.32 for the cheapest grade. Parenthetically, it had got up to over $1.50 back in March, I think it was." | Jan McDaniel | |
| Greensboro, North Carolina | About $1.27 | Sara Jane Clawson | |
| Denham Springs, Louisiana (near Baton Rouge) | "Regular unleaded gas just went up to $1.46 per gallon" | Ernie Cedotal | |
| Quad Cities, western Illinois (Bettendorff and Davenport in Iowa, and Moline and Rock Island in Illinois) | "The price per gallon of the cheap stuff is $1.49" | Doug Bourne | |
| Woodridge, Illinois (a western suburb of Chicago) | "Our gas prices have now gone below the national average. Our state legislature temporarily cut the per-gallon tax by about 10 cents/gal. Add to that: after the media attention the wholesale price in this area suddenly dropped. It topped out in June about $2.12/gal and is now about $1.35/gal. Both cheap by UK standards!" | Dave Krupka | |
| Orlando area, Florida | $1.39 to $1.44 | Terry Wright |
Just for interest, the petrol (gas) price in Britain in mid-November 2000 was about 82p per litre, equivalent to approximately UK£3.10 per US gallon, or about US$4.31 per US gallon at the exchange rate applicable at that time.
Canada
As in the USA, petrol prices in Canada vary quite considerably from region to region.
Petrol prices are rather higher in Canada than in the USA, even allowing for the difference rate of exchange between the two countries' currencies. Because of the difference in the exchange rates and because petrol is sold by the US gallon in the USA and by the litre in Canada, comparisons of the prices in the two countries involve some calculations.
