Vote the Rock

Ya know the runs are legit when John Thompson, the godfather of the Kenner League, has to get on the mic in the middle of a game to calm rabid fans who had stormed the floor for the second time in as many minutes. After clearing the court, Coach T then had to turn the attention of his scowl to Earl Tyson and Steve Francis and demand they put an end to their crossover stalemate. Earl, a playground legend in DC, had started the ordeal when he crossed Francis and faced him with a deep 3-ball.

The stands emptied for the first time.

On the very next possession, Francis snapped Tyson’s ankles before flushing.

The stands emptied again.

That’s the Kenner for ya – a summer league that unfortunately hasn’t received as much national attention as the Rucker. The K, however, is no secret to hoop fans and ballers in the nation’s capitol. Ballers in DC – who got mad game - hoop at Georgetown’s McDonough gymnasium, the league’s official site.

This year, the college league of the Kenner boasted future L studs Joe Forte - last year’s National Freshman of the year out of UNC - and Maryland’s versatile small forward Terence Morris. Kentucky’s Keith Bogans, Temple’s Kevin Lyde, and Maryland’s Lonny Baxter also displayed sick skillz.

Baxter, a bruising 6’8’’ power forward, said: "When you are a kid growing up in DC, you can’t wait until your old enough to play in the Kenner. You see all the great players and you want to be like them. All the best players in the area play in the Kenner."

One team that brought the fans out in droves was the Francis Hitmen. Stevie Franchise was the team’s feature performer, (You saw the ridiculous HTV video of him droppin 62) but his supporting cast was nothing to sleep on. Moochie Norris, Jahidi White, Jerome Williams, Obinna Ekezie, and Walt Williams were all on NBA rosters last year. Wink even flew in Houston Rocket teammate Cuttino Mobley for a few runs. Remember Lawrence Moten and Victor Paige? Those two former Big East wreckers rounded out the squad.
