EGM 139 - February 2001

The February 2001 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly is all about Microsoft's Xbox console. EGM is the first print publication to run shots and information on the final design of the console and the controller and the article shows the first screenshots of Xbox software as well. EGM interviews all the key players in the development of the Xbox and even shows developmental photos for the case design and controller.

EGM always comes correct with reviews and the February 2001 issue is no exception. For the PlayStation 2, Square's first next-generation game, Driving Emotion Type-S, faces the review crew. Two ESPN games also get reviewed including International Track & Field and Winter X Games Snowboarding. It's a big month for Dreamcast reviews as 20 games get rated. Highlighting the lot is Capcom vs. SNK, Grandia II, Project Justice, and Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX. For the Nintendo 64, Rare's latest 3D platformer, Banjo-Tooie, faces EGM's critics. Mickey's Speedway USA, Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo, and Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine are also scored. If you're looking for PlayStation games to fill out your library, Tomb Raider Chronicles, Blade, King of Fighters '99, and Lunar 2 all receive their just rewards.

On the previews front, the PlayStation 2 gets the majority of the coverage in the February 2001 issue of EGM. Capcom's newest franchise, Devil May Cry, is awarded an advanced peek. Zone of the Enders, Star Wars: Starfighter, and Oni are also covered in detail. If you're still hooked on the PSOne, EGM demonstrates that there's still some life left in Sony's 32-bit console with previews for Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, DDR: Disney's Rave, and Fist of the North Star. The Nintendo 64 is quickly heading out to pasture but that didn't stop EGM from covering Dinosaur Planet and the import-worthy Sin and Punishment. The Dreamcast is truly hitting its stride, evidenced by previews for games like Phantasy Star Online, Illbleed, Floigan Brothers, Fighting Vipers 2, Unreal Tournament, Soul Reaver 2, and many more.

As usual, EGM rolls out the codes and strategies for the hottest games on all the systems and all the old favorites such as Quartermann and Press Start are in attendance for your perusal. EGM's editors even discuss the Xbox unveiling in the column, Final Word.
