Vittorio the Vampire: New Tales of the Vampires
by Anne Rice

Vittorio the Vampire is Rice's second installment in her New Tales of the Vampires novella series. Vittorio takes place in 15th-century Renaissance Italy. The title character, Vittorio, is a handsome young man from a wealthy and noble Florentine family. However, when his family is murdered by vampires, Vittorio finds himself wanting vengeance for their deaths, but also yearning for a beautiful vampiress named Ursula.

With this "new tale" Anne Rice introduces readers to a wholly new vampire character. Vittorio even attests that he does not know Lestat, Gabrielle, Louis and the other vampires that Rice has written about. However, that doesn't mean that Vittorio's story is entirely original. Being a mortal of wealth and leisure, the violent death of family, political betrayal/intrigue and the seduction by a vampiric lover (Rice has described this as her version of a Romeo & Juliet-type love story) are all reminiscent of Rice's first New Tales of the Vampires novella, Pandora.

Rice does provide a "Selected and Annotated Bibliography" at the end of the book, suggesting music and further reading materials (similar to what she did at the end of her non-vampire novel Cry to Heaven).

The following books have been recommended either by me or by visitors to the bookshelf. Even though some of the books are listed by Amazon as being out of print or hard to find , I've listed them anyways since you may be able to find them in your local bookstore or through your book club. If you are having trouble locating some of the books listed here you may wish to try The Science Fiction Book Club. Many of my recommendation have been purchased through them.

I've tried to avoid spoiling plots and to keep the synopses short, however, if you'd like to learn more about a book, many (but not all) of the ordering links have information and reviews. Books are listed here alphabetically by author's last name.

The Secret Life of Laszlo, Count Dracula by Roderick Anscombe
First novel by Anscombe, a psychiatrist who has interviewed over 100 murderers (often within 48 hours of the crime). Anscombe approaches the story of Laszlo Dracula from the point of view that he is not a vampire but a severely disturbed human being. Laszlow appears to be more a serial killer than a vampire.

Out of the Light by Jay Kasker
Recommended by Neil
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!
It was recently published here in England and has been excellently received. I read it twice and loved it better the second time. I recommend it because it is entertaining, thrilling, horrific, sad, tragic and thought provoking and I cannot wait for the inevitable sequel.
It is written in the same style of Anne Rice; the lead character narrating the story. It is set in the late 1800's, between England and Boston, Mass, and in my opinion has all the hallmarks of becoming at last a cult classic. Definitely a book worth reading and a talent worth watching.
The synopsis on the cover goes something like this...
In his fast-paced, highly descriptive account of a young vampire's 'life', Kasker invites us into a world of blood, revenge and adventure. From England to America, and back, we travel with Raphael Santos, witnessing his turbulent vampiric awakening and his quest for bloodthirsty revenge, on both mortal and immortal. Not for the weak...

This book is beautiful. It captures the gothic atmosphere of Toronto while it captivates my imagination. It is a series of short stories that are all partly set in the very real atmosphere of a gothic bar in Toronto Canada. Necroscope by Brian Lumley

Necroscope - a person who can speak with the dead.
The Necroscope series includes ten books in all; five from the original Necroscope series, three in the Vampire World and two from Necroscope: The Lost Years. The orignal series is about Harry Keogh a Necroscope who uses his powers of speaking with the dead to fight Vampires. The Vampire World continues with Harry's sons in the world where all Vampires come from (according to Brian Lumley). The Lost Years involve a Vampire with wolf's blood or more commonly known as a Werewolf.
The first series has Harry fighting a different Vampire in each book as well as giving Harry more knowledge of Vampires and more secrets that he learns from the dead. The second series is one long story about Harry's sons. The second book in the series is a bit long and dosen't seem to get you closer to the end of the story, it dosen't feel like it has an ending because you must read the third book to finish the story. It is not necessary to read The Lost Years last but they came out last so it is the correct way.

The Last Vampire, is a very good book about a female vampire, Sita, and the adventures she had up to her death. The saga goes up to six books, but unlike Anne Rice, Christopher Pike's Last Vampire series are a short six books, with up to 200 pages, and in large printing compared to Anne Rice- but I still recommend The Last Vampire series, because that series is a very good one. The author, Christopher Pike, has proven himself to be as talented a writer as Anne Rice, "The Listeners" was a book as large as Anne Rice's, and #1 Best Seller, so just because it's small, doesn't mean its not a good book- I recommend this saga to all people who reads vampire books, no matter how much they like or hate violence, or the gothic side of vampires!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: the Series by Various Authors
Recommended by Drusilla
As ridiculous as this may sound, the novelizations of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," based on the television series by Joss Whedon, truly are an excellent read. While most of these books are classified as juvenille literature, don't underestimate them. At least three of these books, in my opinion, are mis-labeled as young adult reading. These three are "Blooded," "Child of the Hunt," and "Return to Chaos." The first two are co-authored by Christopher Golden and Nancy Holder, while the latter is by Craig Shaw Gardener. There is also a continuing series of books, currently only four have been published, which begins with a novelization of the two- part series premier, "The Harvest." The other three books, in order of publication, are "Halloween Rain," "Coyote Moon," and "Night of the Living Rerun."

Another series currently out is the "Angel Chronicles." This is a collection of novels based on episodes in which the cursed vampire Angel has played a major role. These are excellent books, and in this case the fact that they have pictures in them from the series makes them all the better.

Also out, though difficult to find, is a novelization of the 1992 movie. I must put emphasis on the fact that it is based on Joss Whedon's ORIGINAL script. In other words, things happen the way they were supposed to before the editors got a hold of it and turned it into a B movie. Also, if you want to know more about the show in general, the "Watcher's Guide," an official guide to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is available. It's "full of fun facts to know and tell" as Willow would say.

The Saint - Germain Series by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro
Recommended by Annath
Review of Mansions of Darkness: Set in Peru, Yarbro's romantic vampire hero bears witness too the "civility" of spanish nobility and proves yet again that mortal man is the only true monster. Yarbro's St. Germain series started back in the 1970s and continues to this day. Though most of the early books are out of print, the more recent ones are a must read! Each one meticulously researched and set in varying cultures spanning 3000 years of history. Some of her best books are: Out of the House of Life, Hotel Transylvania, Blood Games, Better in the Dark and Darker Jewels. Check them out, you won't be disappointed.
