| WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER? |

There's good news for modem or ISDN users
who are in search of a nostalgia trip
back to the sixties today; in their infinite kindness, Monolith
and Fox Interactive have released a cut-down version of the
No One Lives Forever demo which features only the Moroccan
Hotel level, but should still give a good feel for the game.
You can get the
new "lite" version of the demo (it weighs in at a touch under
50Mb) from
Fileplanet or
3D Downloads. Meanwhile, some slightly off-putting
news for those who actually took the plunge on the 107Mb demo
earlier this week; apparently, most sites accidentally posted
an earlier build of the game, which had a number of bugs and
an old version of the training mission in it. You can tell
if your version is an old one if, in the first room of the
training mission, the ammo and armour are on tables rather
than in glass cases. The newer version can be downloaded from
BluesNews or from Gigex
- although if it took you an age to get the last version,
it's probably not worth your while getting this.
We've been playing No One Lives Forever quite a bit here in
the office, and so far are very impressed by the clever combination
of Austin Powers styling with Perfect Dark style gameplay
- not to mention the witty dialogue and the wonderfully varied
death animations. It's rare for a first person shooter to
make you laugh out loud, but No One Lives Forever is a definite
candidate for the funniest game we've played in years, as
well as being a highly accomplished FPS game. Could this be
the start of a real revival for the much-maligned Monolith?

| 'HELP US, OBI-WAN KENOBI', SAYS LUCASARTS |

It's been a while since LucasArts did
a decent game based on the Star Wars licence;
all of the Episode One games to date have disappointed, and
even the later Original Trilogy games, such as Force Commander,
were poorly received by public and press alike. In fact, the
last Star Wars game to truly impress was Dark Forces II: Jedi
Knight, which is rightly considered to be one of the best
FPS games ever made. It's no surprise, then, that LucasArts
are returning to the Jedi Knight formula with the (albeit
third-person) Obi-Wan title currently in production. Kevin
Bruner of LucasArts had a
chat with the Stomped crew about progress to date
on the title and the new engine being developed for it.

| WHO WANTS SOME DUKE NUKEM FOREVER, THEN? |

Can you remember when you first heard
about Duke Nukem Forever? If so, you've clearly been playing
computer games for far too long, and desperately need to get
some fresh air and sunlight. After all, this is the game whose
development cycle is somewhat similar to that of a medieval
cathedral in length; in the time since 3D
Realms released the last Duke Nukem game, id Software have
managed two brand new iterations of their Quake licence, empires
have risen and fallen, the ebb and flow
of time across the universe has slowed, and we've all laughed
at the sheer irony of the word "Forever" in the title. However,
every now and then a little titbit of information worms its
way out of 3D Realms, and we all pounce on it instantly and
wax eloquent all over again about how great DNF will be when
it finally arrives… Like this morning, for example, when some
eagle-eyed chap noticed that George Broussard had popped up
on the 3Drealms.com message boards to answer
some questions about the game.
All together now… COME GET SOME!

| IT'S
GOOD TO TALK, SAY TRIBES 2 DEVELOPERS |

Dave Georgeson of Dynamix, developers
of Tribes 2, clearly has too much time on his hands, judging
by the number of interviews he's doing on the web at the moment.
PC GameWorld have a sneak
peek at Tribes 2 up, which features Mr Georgeson
talking a bit about some of the issues which afflicted Tribes
and how they have been rectified in the sequel; and PlanetStarSiege
have posted an interview,
again with Dave
Georgeson, in which they talk about water, trees and - before
you start wondering if
this is a fascinating in depth look at his hobby as a landscape
gardener - weapons
and vehicles in the game. It's all good stuff, and certainly
has our juices flowing at the thought of the game (even more
so than before); but someone at Dynamix needs to stand behind
Dave with a stick and make him do some REAL work, rather than
just nattering away to website editors all day…!

| NEW VENOM MOVIE AT GA-SOURCE |

We caught a glimpse of Venom, a first-person
shooter from Russian dev house GSC Game World, at ECTS and
were rather impressed by it, so it's good to see that the
ECTS video is now up for download at GA-Source. Be warned
- it's a biggie, clocking in at a hefty 25Mb, but if you have
the bandwidth for it, it's well worth grabbing. Although much
of the gameplay seems to be standard FPS fare, the sheer depth
of vision in some of the scenes promises lots of sniping across
valleys and outdoor action, which can only be a good thing.
Watch out for the "interesting" translations from Russian
in some places, though; I particularly like the implication
that humanity is being taken
over by vicious equestrians!

| Hitman
Hits us for a Six |

Hitman is a game where you play a professional
assassin, for hire to whoever can pay the money. You get given
a target, and a briefing…. And that is it. The rest is totally
up to you. If you want to take out the drug baron using a
car bomb then you can, but you will have to find a way to
get to the car to plant it. Or if you prefer things more "up
close and personal", then you can use your cheese wire or
knife.
Hitman is a game of choices, and exploiting game characters
reactions to their surroundings. The AI is scarily real. If
a civilian sees you kill someone they will run off screaming,
and the guards that he runs by may go to see what is causing
all of the hassle. The physics engine in the game is also
very good, with the environment and characters reacting as
they would in real life.
According to Jens Peter Kurup, the Lead Animator on the project,
we should be able to expect a demo within the next 3 weeks.
I for one will be sharpening my knives and loading my magazines
in readiness for this game.

| ECTS
GameLoft/GameSpy/Hercules Q3 DeathMatch |

At this years ECTS show the companies
above combined forces, along with the World Female Quake Champion,
Kornelia, to bring a deathmatch competition to the crowds.
The challengers had to take on Kornelia individually in a
5 minute first to 7 one on one deathmatch. The prizes that
were on offer were GameSpy T-Shirts to any challenger who
could get one frag against Kornelia, and the highest scoring
player of each day would win a Hercules 3D Prophet II GTS
graphics card.
This proved to be tougher than it sounds. Over the 2 days
that the competition ran, less than 10 people managed to get
a frag against Kornelia, and only one person managed to beat
her outright by getting 1 frag and then running away for 5
minutes! Both of the challengers that won the Hercules graphics
cards only managed one frag against the champion.
In total over 100 games were played with Kornelia winning
all but one!
As a bonus event, GameLoft managed to persuade Sujoy to take
up the challenge.
After a hard fought battle Sujoy emerged victorious, winning
by 7 frags to 2. We
recorded a demo of this match for your enjoyment and we will
be posting this in the
next few days.

| TRIBAL
WARFARE |

The Sierra stand at ECTS was a heavily
guarded affair, but drawing inspiration from the stunning
MGS2 footage on the Konami stand, GameLoft managed to sneak
past the security, duck and dive through the PR folk, and
finally reach mission objective - the Dynamix developers huddled
in the corner over the latest build of Tribes 2. Although
the original Tribes failed to make it big in Europe - more
than partially due to the six-month gap between the US and
UK releases of the game, and the terrible PR it received at
launch over here, but also because the game structure was
unsuited to the European Internet cost structure at the time
- many devotees expect Tribes 2 to be a runaway success. There's
no doubt that its innovative combination of action and strategy,
and reliance on team-based play, could make Tribes2 a strong
contender for your online gaming time - especially since from
what we saw at ECTS, Dynamix are determined to fix the flaws
of the original quite comprehensively.
For a start, the script cheats which caused so much trouble
for Tribes have been fixed by a restructuring of the scripting
engine in the game. While the developers refused to be drawn
on how exactly this works, it is certain that the type of
information cheats which the original game suffered from have
been removed, while still allowing coding
of simple mods with a level of ease that leaves other games
in the dust. Skiing (using hills on the maps to gain speed
and height) remains a fundamental part of play, but rather
than being an accidental bug, has actually been coded and
tweaked deliberately to make it more skilful and to limit
how powerful it can be.
Other changes which devotees of Tribes and newbies alike will
be delighted to see include the expansion of the vehicles
system to include land-based vehicles, and the remodelling
of the physics for the air vehicles (which now move much more
realistically, and are generally much more impressive and
useful); the inclusion of water in the game, adding a whole
new tactical element; and, of course, a whole new race to
play as, as well as the original Tribes such as the Blood
Eagle and the Diamond Sword.
While the code we saw was slightly rough - there were no explosions
in place yet, for example, and it did seem to be running at
quite a low framerate even on a high-end machine - Dynamix
are adamant that a public beta will start within a fortnight,
and that the final game will be in the shops - both in Europe
and the USA - by Christmas. If you can't afford that winter
skiing holiday, this may well be the next best thing…

patch comes in three flavors: Retail "Gold version" the Beta
1 to v1.1 and finally the
Collector's Edition to v1.1. They are all available right
here

or loser brackets gives you one point. Don't kill the little
heads.

score.

| Wobbly
Armament or Loose Cannon? |

Many developers have tried to mix driving,
combat and/or law enforcement before, to varied success. Midtown
Maddness had coppers that chased you if you broke
the
traffic laws, but unfortunately you couldn't jump out of the
car and have it away on your toes if things got a little too
hairy. In Activision's Interstate
'82 however you could get out of the car, but due
to the fact that every one else was still in their cars you
usually got made into roadkill.

Loose
Cannon by Digital
Anvil aims to redress this balance. The year is
2016 and the American police have been unable to control the
rampant crime and have withdrawn to concentrate on the city
centres. This is where you come in, as one of many freelance
bounty hunters who scour the land taking jobs as they see
fit. The action is set in 9 fully detailed cities which are
separated by areas of hostile countryside. You choose which
missions you want to accept via a police radio scanner in
your vehicle of choice (there are 15 different fully customisable
types) and then drive to the location of the crime.
How you carry out the missions is up to you, as you have the
choice to stay in your car
or to get out and "do it the old fashioned way". Among the
types of missions that you could encounter are reconnaissance,
hostage rescues, transportation and assassinations, among
others.
The graphics and physics engine has been written from scratch
for this game, where the AI enemies are smart enough to take
cover or even flee if the battle is not going
their way. The engine also includes a day/night cycle, realistic
traffic systems and pedestrians, and a working police force
in each cuty that reacts to what is happening around them,
(instead of standing there eating doghnuts!)
The game is mainly being designed as a single-player game,
but there will be competitive multiplayer modes, like deathmatch,
King of the Hill, etc which should be enough to keep everybody
happy. Up to 8 will be able to play over LAN or the Net.
Expect to see Loose Cannon bundling it's way onto your PC
near the end of this year, but until then feast your eyes
on the shots below.

| Who
Wants to Live Forever? |

In an open IRC chat last night with the
chaps from VoodooExtreme, Monolith CEO Jason Hall revealed
that a demo of their relatively hush-hush Lithtech based game,
No One Lives Forever, has been sent to PC magazines for inclusion
on their cover disks. The demo comprises 4 single player levels,
with a healthy lashing of weapons and items available to the
player, and should give gamers a pretty good idea of how NOLF,
which, with its design roots firmly set in1960's spy movies
and TV series, is already being described in some quarters
as the PCs answer to Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. According
to Hall, the demo will use a pre-release version of the engine,
and feedback received from players will be considered for
the final edition of the game.
In other Monolith news, Hall has also confirmed that the rumoured
mech fighting game in production at the studio has in fact
been in development for 8 months. The game is expected to
be something like Virtual On, a 3D mech combat game which
is amazingly popular in Japan, but has so far failed to set
the western world on fire. With the increasing popularity
of anime and manga in the USA, however, Monolith could well
have a hit on their hands with this one…

Those of you who haven't died of old age
while waiting for the PC port of Metal Gear Solid to appear
(or, more likely, just succumbed and bought a Playstation)
will be interested in having a peek at the new
MGS PC screenshots over at GameSpot UK. Sadly,
even after spending so long in development, the game really
does look like a Playstation port - low resolution textures
and blocky architecture are only emphasised by the high quality
displays found in PCs - and it's uncertain how well the game
will play on a PC as opposed to a console, since it was designed
with the Playstation DualShock controller firmly in mind.
However, the good news is that a first-person view will be
available in the PC port of the game, which should add a whole
new dimension to the gameplay. No release date for the game
is confirmed, but with the gaming world already drooling over
Metal Gear Solid 2, if MGS on the PC is delayed any further
it could miss the boat completely.

| KISS
PSYCHO-CIRCUS: KITSCH-LIKE |

Third Law Interactive is developing a Quake-like
recreating
the universe of the kitsch metal band Kiss (actually, the one
Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, has designed for the
Kiss: Psycho Circus comic). In this Shooter, you are a simple
mortal whose spirit is incarnated in one of the four Kiss
members. Your goal is to regain the costumes so that they
can merge into a superior entity, the only being capable of
defeating Nightmare Child and its demon hordes. A
multiplayer mode is also expected. The game will be
available on PC and Dreamcast on August 8th this year.

| DOOM
2000 REBORN |

After the denial, the counter-denial! During
E3, Tim Willits if ID Software declared that
nothing was expected concerning the remake of mythical Doom...
FLIP-FLOP! John
Carmack has just announced that a new version of Doom is finally
in the works!
Carmack supposedly gave an ultimatum to ID's main leaders
to get the go-ahead:
either let him work on that controversial project or he leaves
the company with his
close colleagues. Fans of the series most certainly appreciate
his stubbornness!

| Return
To Castle Wolfenstein |

Return To Castle Wolfenstein the concept
of its predecessor,
Wolfenstein 3D. US secret agent William "B.J." Blazkowicz,
your mission is to infiltrate a castle infested with Nazi
soldiers and to thwart the evil plans of Himmler. This
National-Socialist fiend wants to raise an army of undead
in
the pay of Hitler, creating an indestructible force for the
regime's dark purposes. Up until now, everything is fine,
and
we will once again find ourselves inside the castle, in the
middle of Nazi territory,
advancing to the End laboratory, etc.
To perfect this game, Gray Matter were called to help, the
fearsome elders of Xatrix.
Having already worked on two other Quake-style games, Redneck
Rampage and
Kingpin, rest assured that the blood feast tone will be also
conferred to Wolfenstein
2000.
Wolfenstein will use the Quake 3 engine, so expect an all-purpose
fluidity and
kickass textures throughout all the levels. According to what
E3 has shown, the
numerous light effects dotting the maps and the realism of
each background are
fabulous. The game is extra nifty and extremely beautiful.

 Fed
up with destroying everything in sight and
leaving terror in your path? Dreaming about an
ounce of finesse in a world of brutes? Eidos has the
thing for you! No, no, it's not about the return of the
daughter of Lara Croft, but about the nocturnal and
solitary adventures of a scoundrel, ace thief, in a
gloomy and gothic
world inspired from the new steampunk trend
(Where Victorian era meets Heroic Fantasy, and Elves wear
petticoats and top hats,
Gnomes fly zeppelins and build metal golems).
Gameplay is in first person, but here, can't shoot'em up and
beat the hell out of
everything! You will have to use discretion and wits to meet
the proposed challenges.
Fifteen missions are waiting, from planned kidnapping to bank
robbery. The
secondary intrigues are numerous.

| Doom
2000? |

Following a brief discussion with ID Software's
Tim Willits,
Doomworld announces that the release of Doom 2000 is less
than probable. Indeed, there were rumors about an eventual
follow up to the classic, lately, but it seems the reality
is
becoming less and less probable. Ah, GodDoommit!

| Metal
Gear Solid 2 : Realtime interactive movie ! |
|

In Sons of Liberty, the long-awaited
follow-up to Metal Gear
Solid, you again play the role of Snake who has to infiltrate
and break up an organization. The game's trailer was
exclusively broadcasted at E3 in front of a captivated
audience. Todd McFarlane (creator of Spawn) did not hide
his enthusiasm, and a Japanese news team collected the
first impressions of the public to present them to Hideo
Kojima, the designer. Konami has once again placed its bet
on realism.
Developers are fully enjoying the capacities of the PS2.
So, ALL the game
environments will be 3D, and everything will be interactive.
Bottles on the shelves,
paintings on the walls, even the doorknobs can be blasted
away by a lost bullet!
Special care will be put into the scenario, atmosphere music,
and opponents' artificial
intelligence. With all these elements, the game is expected
to be the pioneer of 'FP
Movies'. Metal Gear Solid 2 is scheduled for Fall 2001.
It will be a loooong wait…
