Episode 1: Your Body is an Instrument

Fughetta's great great grandnephew Farkas, having inherited Faffner Hall, arrives to take over. When Fughetta shows him around the hall and introduces him to the resident musicians, such as Hakan Hardenberger and Gary Karr, he seems particularly interested in their instruments. Fughetta suggests they gather the instruments together in order to play them for Farkas. lmagine everyone's surprise when Farkas suggests they gather together the instruments so he can sell them! Thanks to Bobby McFerrin, however, everyone remembers that there's one instrument each of them has that Farkas can't sell...

Episode 2: Delighting in Sounds

The Wild Impresario is listening all over for a sound to top the bill for the Festival of Sounds. Farkas overhears and decides to provide the sound - in the form of blowing up the hall with dynamite. Meanwhile, mail boy Nigel Kennedy, hoping to be a part of the Festival, gives Wild a demonstration of the range of sound you can get from the violin and then hands him a letter. The perfumed missive turns out to be from Zola, an old girlfriend of Wild's from his days in a gang called The Wild Bunch. Zola was Wild's second love. His first was Joni Mitchell. Like Joni, Zola is wild about sounds, so the Wild Imp is even more desperate to impress her. But with which sound? Surprisingly enough, it's Farkas who inadvertantly helps Wild out by ending the Festival of Sound with a bang!

Episode 3: Sounds Become Music

When an alien lands its spaceship in Faffner Hall, Farkas tries to keep it captive in his workshop. He figures he can exploit the poor little creature to make an absolute fortune. Fughetta, Mimi, Riff and the Wild lmpresario, however, learn that what the alien needs to return to its home is music, and each tries to provide the appropriate "fuel." Riff has a dream in which Mark Knopfler, Paddy Maloney and George Martin help him with a tune he's had going through his head. Mimi meets Fish, the Lyric Wizard and writes a song. But the music which finally helps the alien get home comes from a completely unexpected source...

Episode 4: Music is More Than Technique

When Piganini, the legendary virtuoso violinist, discovers his recording studio has been double booked to Julia Fordham, he accepts an invitation from Riff and Mimi to record a live concert at Faffner Hall. He assumes, of course, that everyone at Faffner Hall will want to hear him play what he is most famous for -- scales! Wrong. They want music. Piganini suffers a severe loss of confidence and hides in a closet where janitor Ry Cooder finds him. Thanks to the janitor, Piganini is able to get beyond his scales, brilliant as they are, and to play music for the first time in his life.

Episode 5: The Voice is an Instrument

When Farkas sells Faffner Hall to a zookeeper, Fughetta, anguished, remembers the Hall when it was at its peak. Oh, the concerts they used to give! She tells her friends a story about how she was once on the stage with a famous opera singer (Thomas Allen). The Wild lmpresario is elated. That's it! Fughetta will give a concert! And with the proceeds, they'll buy back the Hall! Fughetta thinks this is a brilliant idea, except for one thing -- she can't sing, "Everyone can sing!" insists the Wild lmpresario. Still not convinced, Fughetta stops time and consults her friends Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, the talking busts. They tell her about a concert they heard given by a group called Electric Phoenix whose members displayed a wide range of vocal techniques. Fughetta, encouraged, agrees to give the concert and takes a voice lesson from Marion Montgomery. Meanwhile, the Wild lmp reports that the concert is sold out! Their problems are over... until they discover that Farkas has ordered all the tickets, and he's not going to pay for them. All seems to be lost until the zookeeper, who is head-over-heels in love with Fughetta, gives back the Hall just to hear her sing.

Episode 6: Reacting to Sounds

Fughetta is doing her once-in-every-fifty-years sound check to make sure there are no other ghosts in Faffner Hall. lf she happened to find a ghost, she would have to leave as no two ghosts are allowed to haunt the same place. Following one ghost-like sound, Fughetta discovers Austrian composer H.K. Gruber rehearsing with a student orchestra, No, no ghosts in there, but what's that sound? lt turns out to be Dizzy Gillespie -- he thinks Fughetta's come for a lesson on her ear trumpet, Fughetta, relieved, declares her sound check complete, She is the only ghost in Faffner Hall...but what's that sound? Fughetta is convinced it's another ghost. She's about to leave her beloved hall when the sound source reveals itself to be none other than Farkas.

Episode 7: If You Can Play It, It's an instrument

Thinking he might turn Faffner Hall into a scrap metal plant, Farkas wonders what he could use for scrap. When Courtney Pine comes to the door and tries to sell him a saxophone, Farkas gets a brilliant idea -- what better material to reduce to cubes of scrap than musical instruments? He scours the hall for instruments and runs into instrument builder David Sawyer. Meanwhile, Fughetta and friends are trying to set a new Faffner Hall record for doing something interesting but crazy on a musical instrument. Farkas interrupts and pretends he wants to see a videotape about music. They show him a tape featuring members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, While the others watch, fascinated, Farkas steals all their instruments and reduces them to scrap. But in the end, Riff plays the scrap -- and sets the Faffner Hall record for being the first to perform on a Crushed Orchestra!

Episode 8: Improvised Sound

Everyone in Faffner Hall is in a state of high excitement - a television crew is coming to make a program about the Hall. Mimi is busy trying to write a piece which will be the highlight of the show. She and Riff are going to perform it.… if only she could write it. As she struggles away, Farkas enters to give her and Riff a job they must measure all the rooms in Faffner hall - all 1,177 of them, So, Riff and Mimi are forced to forget about the television show. They reluctantly set off to measure the rooms and soon discover Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Joseph Shabalala tells them they are on a journey in which they must follow their ears. They then find themselves in a part of the Hall they've never seen before. lt's a musical maze. After getting nowhere, they run into the Gil Evans Band who advise them to improvise in order to solve the maze. When Riff and Mimi finally get back to the lobby of the Hall, the television crew is just about to leave, Farkas is delighted because he knows Mimi had no time to write a piece. "But it doesn't matter!" says Mimi, thinking of their experience in the maze, "cause we're gonna improvise!"

Episode 9: Notation: The Sign That Gets the Sound

The Wild Impresario has written a piece which he wants the Faffner Hall Ensemble to play in the Composition Contest. But how can he write it down so that the musicians will play it exactly as he wants it to sound? He tries pictures, sol-fa, a computer, staff notation. After James Taylor tells him all about chord signs, he produces a score which Farkas steals, thinking that by burning it, he'll be destroying the music. On his way to the furnace room, Farkas runs into Aswad who mistakes him for a disillusioned musician and tries to tell him that he should try recording his music in order to preserve it. Meanwhile, the Wild Imp has managed to produce a score which is just right - except he can't remember one of the sounds. Farkas enters to gloat about destroying the music. The Wild Imp immediately starts to sing it to him to show it hasn't been destroyed, so Farkas bangs on the nearest object to drown out the sound. That's it! That's the sound Wild had forgotten! Wild writes it down, the Faffner Hall Ensemble performs the piece just as Wild wanted it to sound, and Faffner Hall wins the Composition Contest,

Episode 10: Discovering New Sounds

On Make a New Sound Day, Farkas gets a robot which he's instructed to get rid of all the musicians. Fughetta and her friends are outraged. Why can't the Hall have a director who loves sound? Mimi tries to imagine such a thing, and comes up with the image of Patrick Moraz surrounded by his keyboards, That gives Mimi an idea, Why don't they kill two birds with one stone and use bits from the evil robot to build a synthesizer which will make new sounds? Pretending to help Farkas fix his robot, Mimi and Riff steal half of its insides. While they construct their synthesizer, they show the baffled Fughetta a tape starring Thomas Dolby who explains, with the help of a fly in a matchbox, how a synthesizer works. When their synthesizer is finished, they play it. The robot mysteriously rises from its deathbed. They all think it's going to destroy them, but instead it starts to play music! They sign it up for their Make A New Sound concert, and once again, Farkas is foiled.

Episode 11: Music Brings Us Together

Just as Fughetta's about to take off for her annual trip around the world to visit her musician friends and her dear (but frightening) Great Uncle Fishknife, she discovers that Farkas is turning Faffner Hall into a haunted house and has advertized her as the chief attraction! Meanwhile, Farkas is reading an ancient book by his great great great great Uncle Fishknife and Aunt Flossie all about ghosts to find out how to trap Fughetta so she can't de-materialize and get away from him. When Fughetta arrives to give Farkas a piece of her mind about his plan, he plays her a tape of Yomo Torro. She's so enchanted, she forgets the time and remains solid too long. When she tries to de-materialize, she can't. Farkas has trapped her! So, Fughetta, chained to a chair, is the star of Farkas' horror show. Friends like Steve Turre send her letters, and Youssou N'Dour comes all the way from Senegal to visit her. Eventually, Fughetta and her friends manage to contact Great Uncle Fishknife by singing the Great Uncle Fishknife song. He says they can all help Fughetta de-solidify by singing the same note together, everyone, all at the same time. Farkas refuses to join in until Uncle Fishknife convinces him otherwise, Fughetta de-materializes and sets off on her journey, leaving Farkas without a ghost to haunt his haunted Hall.

Episode 12: The Power of Music
Guest Artists: Como String Quartet, Los Lobos, York Gamelan Orchestra
First Aired: 11/27/89
Farkas has a bad cold which he blames on living with a ghost. lf only he could get rid of Fughetta.... Just then, the doorbell (the York Gamelan Orchestra) rings, and in walks Madame Mumu who just so happens to be a ghost exterminator. Farkas hires her on one condition: she must assure him that she hates music. Madame Mumu swears she is totally unaffected by it and even tests herself by listening to Los Lobos. Meanwhile, Fughetta's friends are worried that Madame Mumu might succeed. After all, sound is powerful. The Wild lmp says he even knows of a restaurant that lets you choose your own music, supplied by the Como String Quartet, depending on the mood you want to create. But Fughetta poo-poos the powers of Madame Mumu until Madame Mumu starts to chant and Fughetta starts to disappear. But Fughetta chants back. The chant becomes a musical piece, and not only do Fughetta and Madam Mumu end up fast friends, but they also cure Farkas' cold. Ah, the power of music!

Episode 13: Anyone Can Make Music

lt's time for the 103rd Annual Fughetta Faffner Memorial Concert, and it's also time to pay Farkas his rent. No one has the money, so he puts everyone to work. No memorial concert until the rent is paid. When Riff hears this, he runs away. He meets a Talking Stone (Robin Williamson) who tells him a tale of days gone by when everyone made music, This gives Riff an idea. For the concert, everyone will make music -- even Farkas! Farkas? Make music? Forget it! But when Mimi hits the gong to call everyone to dinner, Farkas is standing behind it. The sound of the gong does something to his brains. He exits, singing to himself, and runs into a surprised Michala Petri. He demands that she stop working and play the recorder! Everyone in the Hall must make music! When it's time for the concert, the Wild lmp announces their special guest artist, Farkas Faffner! Mimi hits the gong again... and just then, Farkas goes back to being Farkas. He tries to stop the concert, but they all ignore him and sing a song he wrote in his altered state called, "Anyone Can Make Music!"
