CHAT TRANSCRIPT — MAY 19, 1999
One-on-One with Garry St. Jean

St. Jean
The reunion between Garry St. Jean and the Golden State Warriors began on July 10, 1997 when St. Jean was hired as the Warriors General Manager. St. Jean had previously spent four seasons as a Warriors assistant to Coach Don Nelson from 1988-1992 and was welcomed back to the Bay Area with open arms. With his new role of general manager, the man commonly referred to as "Saint" shifted his of 25 years of sideline work into the front office in order to produce a winner in Oakland.

As GM, St. Jean engineered trades last season that brought veterans Terry Cummings, Chris Mills and John Starks to the Bay Area and was also was responsible for the Draft Day trade which sent Vince Carter to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for promising rookie and 1998 College Player of the Year Antawn Jamison. This collection of moves helped the Warriors improve their winning percentage to .420, a jump of .188 from the previous season and marked the third greatest improvement in winning percentage of all NBA teams in 1998-99.

Though the Warriors missed the playoffs and are lottery-bound this year, it may be the last time in a while because St. Jean & Co. are putting the pieces of a playoff contender together.

St. Jean previewed Saturday's NBA Lottery and the talent available in the upcoming NBA Draft in a live chat on Wednesday.

Who do you think will win the championship? Who do you think will win the West? Who do you think will win the East?

St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:01pm ET
Well, I don't know if my educated opinion is going to hold strong, but prior to the Sacramento series I thought Utah would win the West, but now I don't think it's as clear cut. San Antonio's taken their game up another level, and Utah has their hands full with Portland.

In the East, everybody's going to say New York's going to beat Atlanta. Well, health is a big factor there. If Lenny Wilkens' team was firing on all cylinders, I think he'd be an underdog. With that said, I think Philadelphia's going to be a great light-heavyweight.

They're going to go a lot of rounds with Indiana, but Indiana will prevail, and I think whoever wins new York-Atlanta, Indiana will win. Two months ago I would have said Utah. Today I'm less clear. That would be a tremendous series, due to the veterans, and the journeys they've both (Utah and Indiana) taken to get there. I think that would be special.

Ernie from fas.harvard.edu at 3:02pm ET
Hi Garry, Congratulations on the team's improvement this past year. Now, heading into the lottery, do you think it's better to draft for need or for position? Thanks.
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:03pm ET
Gary Fitzsimmons, who's been in the league for a long time, and I are on the same page in that we think you're in big trouble in the NBA when you draft specifically for needs, and shut your eyes to the other player available.

You have a lot of ways to go: you can trade your pick, move it for veterans, look at your pick and take the best player avaialble and strengthen your team. But I think when you lock into a position, you are vulnerable for mistakes.

touchdown from oracle.com at 3:04pm ET
Garry,

Who would you consider to be the top four point-guard/shooting-guard prospects coming out in this year's draft? What are your thoughts on Jason Terry and Andre Miller? Do you think either could be a quality starting PG for the Warrior's next year?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:07pm ET
You know, when you talk about the guards, points and shooting guards, (Steve) Francis is a special athletic talent. And looks to have a very bright future. And then you go to the other coast and you've got (Baron) Davis, who's got a strength and tenacity and a vision about him that makes you like his game. Then you've got a guy like (Rich) Hamilton, who was under the bright lights of the NCAA, and stepped it up, showing the scoring and transition game that you like about him.

Terry and Andre Miller: those are the two seniors. With that you've got experience, guys who've successfullly run their teams, done what they've had to do to win. Miller's case, plays great defense, doesn't look to force scoring opportunities. He's extremely well-coached. Jason Terry has been behind Bibby, Stoudamire, whoever.

But his turn came, he played with alot of underclassmen, and his elevated his game. He made lots of big shots at the end. In different ways, one being an all-around game, one being a scorer, they both kept their programs at a really high level.

Geno Zertuche from setka.com at 3:07pm ET
Do you prefer to build through the draft or is free agency the way to go in today's NBA?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:09pm ET
I think you need to have an open mind, and understand that the restrictions that the cap places on you. You have to manage your cap. Dependent on the number of assets you have, you want to have cap flexibility, to allow you to be able to better your team. In the same sense, you wnat to develop a young nucleus, and one of the great ways to do that is through the draft. You have to make good decisions there as well.

I think they tie hand in hand. You can have a number of good, young picks in the draft, consecutive years, but young players have to learn how to win. That was the point I was making about Indiana and Utah. That's where you maybe acquire veterans: through your draft flexibility. Wether you're over or under the cap. You have to have that leadership in the locker room, that chemistry, and that comes from the veterans.

Garry St. Jean's brother from cnpapers.net at 3:09pm ET
On the subject of big men, who would you prefer: Manute Bol circa Wizards, or the good ole Golden State Manute Bol?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:10pm ET
I love my experience with Manute Bol! We've been extremely lucky people to be in the NBA, and when you make friendships with people like Manute Bol, you're lucky. He's a very special person. And if you've got knowledge of where the next Manute Bol is, please send it to me!
Seth Bleicher from ght.iadfw.net at 3:10pm ET
Mr. Saint-Jean,

Who in this draft could immediately make a big impact in the NBA?

St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:12pm ET
I think it goes back to what we were sharing about guys like Duncan, you know he's going to become a franchise player. That's different from an impact player. I think people wiill look at this year's draft and look at the years that (Vince) Carter and (Paul) Pierce, and (Jason) Williams had, and our last 25 games with Antawn Jamison.

There's a talent level there, and it's a player having an opportunity. You can go with a club and not have an opportunity right away. With that said, we've got an interesting year where four of the top eight picks are going to teams who've traded for those picks. Some established teams will be acquiring these picks. They may have depth, which won't allow a guy to come in right away. Cleveland might have Boston's pick, Minnesota (might have) New Jersey's.

I don't know that there's guys up there who're going to jump out at you as guys who'll definitely jump right in and be major impact guys.

New Warriors from knology.net at 3:13pm ET
Garry,
Do you have any good luck charms for the draft lottery this weekend?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:14pm ET
Gary Fitzsimmons and I will attend. He will be in the back room, I'll be out front. We're trying to figure out a secret communication vehicle, that he can let me know if we move up and get one, two or three. In all honesty, we've gone there and stayed the same, gone there and moved down, gone there and moved up. If someone wants to share something with us, I'm not from the school that says I won't carry something there. I'm not probably going to go there like my old pal Nellie did last year and place a horseshoe on the table. I don't think so.
Mike Richardson from gamewood.net at 3:14pm ET
What is your opinion of William Avery and Corey Magette of Duke? Will all three Duke players go top 10 in draft?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:17pm ET
While I think the early consensus of the league would say "yes", they have a great shot of going in the top 10. It shows the great program that Mike K has built at Duke. These are the first underclassmen coming out, and many of us share Mike's concerns with trying to encourage guys to stay in school.

But they're out, Brand is a defined four, a great low post scorer, great hands. What's going to be pivotal for him is size, his workouts with teams. With Avery, you have youth: sophomore, good quickness, good body, shot-maker. The concern there is experience.

Then you take the E for experience, and make it even larger when you talk about Magette. Everyone notes that this young guy is blessed with a terrific frame and has a great upside. But can he come in, is there the ability to play right away or is he a guy you're going to have to wait a few years for?

Chris from mil-wi.concentric.net at 3:17pm ET
Garry, what is the status of Erick Dampier? Is it likely that he'll re-sign with the team?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:19pm ET
When the period for discussion with his people comes up, we think we're going to be able to go in a positive direction. Erick and his reps have both shared their desires to play here with the Warriors. He loves living in the Bay Area, and he really respects our organization.

On the other side of the coin, we think he's a young player with alot of potential. We forget that it takes time for big guys, in most cases. We have our exceptions, like (Tim) Duncan and Shaq, but we think that, at 24, he has a bright future, and we'll do everything we can to keep him a part of the Warrior family for a long time to come.

Tony from gene.com at 3:19pm ET
What is your opinion on the high school kid Jonathan Bender?
If he fell to our spot would you consider him?

St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:20pm ET
I think everybody is going to have to do alot of homework on a high school guy not many people have had the chance to see in person. He shined in the McDonald's games, breaking Michael Jordan's scoring record, and he has the potential to go in the top 10, again depending on how well his meetings and workouts go when he visits each club.
Mike Richardson from gamewood.net at 3:20pm ET
Who are the top center prospects? What about Evan Eschmeyer , Todd MacCulloch, A.J. Bramlett , Alexsander Radojevic, Tim Young?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:23pm ET
You've got them all, we don't have to get into a dissertation about them all. I guess the two most noteworthy guys would be MacCulloch, who's had a very solid career in Washington. The guy makes shots; big body. And we talked about Barton, and Eschmeyer, who did a nice job at Northwestern. The key will be, again, how do things work out for these guys? You study them on film, you bring them in...how does he relate to you? How is he, on and off the court.

We talk every year about not having enough centers, and if you can find one you'll be happy with, you'll take him. None of these guys, though, is ready to step in right now, like Duncan did two years ago. These guys are going to take alot of work. You have a team with multiple picks, like Cleveland, Atlanta, Toronto, they can take these guys, work with them, allow them to grow, and see if they can come in.

Maybe they won't be big-time starters, but if you find yourself a good backup pick, there's nothing wrong with that.

Ed Dunn from cisco.com at 3:23pm ET
Garry,

I am a big Warrior fan and season ticket holder. How much are the Warriors under the cap for this year? Is it possible for you to fit an impact guard such as Terrell Brandon or Mitch Richmond?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:25pm ET
There's some differnet scenarios. Are you going to renounce your free agents? That's a big key. We could be in the vicinity of $7 to $8 million, we could be at a couple of million. There's different ways we can take it. You bring up a couple of veteran guards who are free agents, and we're going to look to improve our ability to score. Whether that's on the perimeter or through penetration, it's through the guard spot. That'll be an area of focus, and we'll see where that takes us.

We've been spending an awful lot of time looking at scenarios. We're going to be prepared, going to make good decisions and help our ballclub. We've tried to emphasize that you have internal development, where you work hard withg young players, and we're going to be in the free agent situation, be involved with the draft, and look for trades, to help us become a better team, come the fall.

BlazerDave at 3:25pm ET
Who is your all time favorite NBA player?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:26pm ET
Whoo! Wow! Well, I'm from Massachusetts, so I guess my all time guy is Bill Russell. When I was a young kid, he was the man, and the Celtics were the team I listened to with the radio under my pillow, when my mother told me to go to sleep.
Bdog at 3:26pm ET
Garry, way to go on ticket prices! You are thinking of us regular fans, which is nice.
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:29pm ET
We might have had a precedent-setting press conference this week. We not only unveiled the logo for the upcoming All-Star game, which will be here in the Bay Area, but we also unveiled our strategies, our plans for our ticket structure. We're going to have a "hard cap", we're leaving it right where we are.

In many places, prices have been lowered. We understand what the fans have gone through for the past five years here, through some tough years, and then last year's situation. Now this past year we come off a situation where a number of fans have come back. Our slogan has been "A Great Time out" Come see the Warriors.

Our players played hard for us. There's a different perception, an image out there that people like about our team. We want to create every chance we can for moms and dads to bring their children to games next year, and we think with the price structure we're going to have and the team we'll have, we're going to create a special bond with our fans.

Mike Richardson from gamewood.net at 3:29pm ET
What is the main position need that you see for your team. It appears that you are gradually building strength at each position, so where are you looking for the most help?

St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:30pm ET
I think we alluded to that earlier, that we like the potential and youth of our front line, and we look at our club and know that we were the No. 1 rebounding team in the league, and we defended well. We'd like to score more. With that said, we talked about those free agents, the ability to put it on the floor, perimeter shooting. Those are areas we'd like to address when we get to the draft in June.
Geno Zertuche from setka.com at 3:31pm ET
You've worked with Don Nelson and he is famous for not tipping his hand about draft choices. How much posturing and smoke-screening really goes on with other GMs?
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:33pm ET
There's many ways to approach it. Many guys are tight to the vest. We've seen examples where guys have tipped their hat, then been circumvented by other guys. I don't think it's disrespectful to keep quiet. This is a business and people are trying to get the upper hand. The more knowledge they acquire, the better their educated guess, and they can work from there.

Sometimes media will say, "Gee, you're not telling us enough!" You can share some things, but the fact is, you have to keep your most pertinent knowledge within your room — your "war room", your "room of information". That stays within.

Mike Richardson from gamewood.net at 3:33pm ET
I assume we'll see even more of Antawn Jamison next year? I know some the press experts have been scoffing at the Carter-Jamison trade but I think Jamison will be an All-Star real soon.
St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:36pm ET
When you're a player or a coach, you want things to happen the first day you step on the floor. When you're a manager, you want the positive in the present tense, but you've got to think about the future. We think this young man has an extrememly large upside. We think he's going to be a major impact player for many years, because of who he is as a guy, plus his physical skills.

He's a competitor, and it was tough in the beginning for him to swallow. Gary and I said from the get-go, it was a difficult situation to have Donyell Marshall here, and we acquired Chris Mills. . .those are veteran guys. He had to come in and establish himself, earn minutes.

He did that, not immediately, but when he did, there was a bond, a nice feeling, between our fans and him. He stated that, after the draft, and I don't know many of our fans who'd go in a different direction. They think he's going to be a heck of a player.

St. Jean
Garry St. Jean at 3:36pm ET
All of us who are NBA fans, and people involved in the game: Hey, enjoy it. This is going to be a heck of a next month, and it's great for our game, whether we're talking about the playoffs, the draft, everything. It's been a nice rebound from a tough situation we were all in.
