Costs (Kosten) Development costs are expected to be 450 million US-Dollars. Sticker price for the A330-200 is around 112 - 118 million US-Dollars in mid-1998, ten million or so more than a Boeing 767-300ER but roughly the same as a Boeing 767-400ER Competition (Konkurrenz) Boeing 767-300ER Boeing 767-400ER Boeing (McDonnell Douglas) MD-11 Remarks (Bemerkungen) The -200 is a long-range development of the basic A330, with a shortened fuselage (5,3 m) and bigger fin. The programme was launched on 24. November 1995, with a first order by ILFC coming in in March 1996. Flight testing began on 13. August 1997 with a four-hour sortie from Toulouse. The crew on the maiden flight included test pilots William Wainwright and Bernd Schäfer. The first A330-200 is powered by General Electric CF6-80E1-engines, but the Pratt-powered variant was flown in December, and the Rolls-engined version flew 24 June 1998. Certification by the FAA and the JAA (Joint Aviation Authorities) as well as Transport Canada was achieved on March 31, 1998 covering the GE-engined variant. By that time, the type had logged 169 flights and 380 flying hours. Certification for the PW4000 engines was achieved in May 1998 . The first CF6-powered A330-200 entered service with Canada 3000 (leased from ILFC) on 29 May 1998. In 1999, Swissair is operating the largest A330-200 fleet with 12 planes.
