Materials:

#10 bedspread weight crochet cotton: pastel variegated

#10 bedspread weight crochet cotton: white

Croceht Hook Size 7 (1.65mm) Steel

(1) 4 inch Styrofoam ball

1 musical button: "Rock A Bye Baby"

Pearlescent paint

14 inch piece of 31/2 mm pearl beadstring

18 inches of l/8 inch white satin ribbon

Alphabet beads spelling baby's name and year or desired message

2 inch cuppie doll

(2) 5mm pearls

Skill Level: Intermediate

 

Special stitches:

Dc shell: (dc, ch1) 4 times

(P2) - Ch 2 slip stitch back into the top and side lps of the 1st stitch.

 

To prepare ball; Cut 1 1/4" off top of ball (FIG 1 of Diagram). With a pen, draw a line 1/2 inch wide around. (FIG 2 of Diagram). Slowly cut around line. Cut down 1 1/2 inch; 1 1/2 inch deep. With a spoon, pop out core. Discard Styrofoam core. Paint ball with Pearlessent paint. Insert musical button on bottom of ball.

 

Skirt: with pastel:

Rnd 1: Ch 108, making sure ch is not twisted, join to form a ring.

Rnd 2: Ch 5, (sk 2 ch, dc in next ch, ch 2) 35 times, at end, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch 5.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same sp; in next dc: *+ (dc, ch 1) 4 times, dc-shell made +, rep from + to + in next dc, sc in next dc, rep from around, join with sl st to 1st sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 6, (sc in middle dc of next sh, ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3) 17 times, sc in middle dc of next sh, ch 3, sl st in 3d ch of beg ch 6.

Rnd 5: (Ch 4, dc, ch 1, dc) in same as joining, (sc in next sc, sh in next dc) 17 times, sc in next sc, (dc, ch 1) 1 times in beg st, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 4.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3, sc in middle dc of sh, rep from * around, join with sl st to beg sc.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in same st, * sh in next dc, sc in next sc. Rep From * around, join with sl st to beg sc.

Rnd 8-11: Rep Rnds 4-7.

Rnd 12: FOR EDGING: Ch 1, sc in same sp, *{sc in next dc, (ch 3, p2, sc in next dc) 3 times}, sc in next sc, rep from * 17 times, rep from { to } once, join with sl st in 1st sc, finish off and weave in ends.

 

Canopy: with pastel:

Rnd 1: Ch 6, join with sl st in 1st ch to form a ring. Ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join with sl st in 1st sc. (12 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st in 1st sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in ea sc around, join with sl st in 1st sc. (24 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sp, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, join with sl st in 1st sc. (36 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st in 1st sc.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sp, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, join with sl st in 1st sc.. (54 sc)

Rnd 7: Ch 4, tr in next sc, dc in next 43 sc, tr in next 2 sc, leave last 7 sts unworked, turn.

Rnd 8: (Working in rows) WORKING IN FRONT LOOPS FOR THIS ROUND ONLY: Ch 3, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 37 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, dc in top of beg ch 4, turn.

Rnd 9: (Working in rows) Ch 1, sc in same sp, * sk 2 st, 5 dc in next st- shell made, sk 2 st, sc in next st, rep from * 8 times, turn.

Rnd 10: (Working in rows) Ch 6, (sc in middle dc of next sh, ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3) 7 times, sc in middle dc of next sh, ch 3, dc in 1st sc, turn.

Rnd 11: (Working in rows) Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, (sc in next sc, sh in next dc) across, sc in next sc, 3 dc in 3d ch of ch 6, turn.

Rnd 12: (Working in rows) Ch 1, sc in same sp, (ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3, sc in middle dc of next sh) across, at end- sc in top of beg ch 3, turn.

Rnd 13: (Working in rows) Ch 1, sc in same sp, (sh in next dc, sc in next sc) 8 times, turn.

Rnd 14-16: Rep rnd 10-12.

Rnd 17: (Working in rows) Ch 1, sc in same sp, *+2 dc, ch 3, p2, (dc, p2) 2 times, dc+, rep from + to + in next dc, sc in next sc, rep from * across, finish off and weave in ends.

 

TO JOIN CANOPY TO SKIRT: With right sides together, and bottom edge of canopy evenly spaced out over skirt, join with sl st to 43rd ch of beg ch 108.

 

TO JOIN SKIRT TO BALL: Weave 1/8 inch ribbon in and out of dc of rnd 1 & 2 at top of skirt. Use glue to help stay put. Tie ribbon in a bow on front of cradle.

 

Bed Bottom: (make 2 with pastel):

Rnd 1: Ch 6, join with sl st to 1st ch to form a ring, ch 3, 23 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc) 5 times, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3. (30 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) 14 times, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3, finish off and weave in ends. (45 dc)

With wrong sides together: going through both thickness, join with sc in any dc, ch 3, p2, (sc in next 2 dc, ch3, p2) 21 times, sc in last sc, join with sl st to1st sc, finish off and weave in ends.

 

Dress: with white:

Rnd 1: Ch 25, join with sl st to 1st ch to form a ring. Ch 1, sc in ea ch around, join with sl st in 1st sc.

Rnd 2-4: Ch 1, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st in 1st sc. (25 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, (ch 3, p2, sc in next 2 sc) around, join with sl st in 1st sc, finish off and weave in ends.

Working in opposite side of starting ch, join with sl st in any ch, ch 3, dc in next 4 ch, ch 5, sk 8 ch, sl st in next ch and sl st in next 3 ch, ch 5, sk next 8 ch; sl st in top of beg ch 3, finish off and weave in ends. Put dress on doll.

 

Blanket: with white:

Rnd 1: Ch 6, sl st in 1st ch to form a ring, ch 3, 3 dc in ring, (ch 3, 4 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 1, join with hdc in top of ch 3. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc around post of hdc, *dc in next 4 sts, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch 3 sp's, rep from * 2 times, dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, join with hdc in top of ch 3.

Rnd 3-5: Ch 3, dc around post of hdc, dc in ea st across to next ch 3 * sp, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch 3 sp, rep from * 2 times, dc in ea st across to ch 1 sp, 2 dc in ch 1 sp, ch 1, join with hdc in top of ch 3. At end of Rnd 5, finish off and weave in ends.

 

Edging on Blanket: with pastel:

Join with *sc in 1st dc of row, sk 2 dc, +2 dc, (ch 3, p2, dc) 3 times +, rep from + to + in next dc, sk next 2, sc in next dc, sk 2 dc, (2 dc, ch3, p 2, tr, ch 3, p2) in next dc, (tr, ch 3, p2, dc, ch 3, p2, dc) in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk 2 dc, rep from + to + once, sk 2 dc, sc in last dc, work (sc, hdc, dc, ch 3, p2, hdc, sc) in corner ch-3 sp, rep from * 3 times, at end, sl st in 1st sc, finish off and weave in ends. With pastel: ch 60 and finish off. Dab ends with glue to secure. Cut off excess thread. Wrap doll in blanket and tie string in a bow.

 

Flowers: (make 2):

Leaving a 3 inch piece of thread, ch 11, sl st in 10th ch from hk, (ch 10, sl st in same sp as last sl st) 5 times, (ch 6, sl st between next ch-10 lp) 5 times, leaving a 3 inch piece of thread, finish off and weave in ends. Glue 1-5mm pearl to center. Repeat for other flower. Tie to end corner of canopy where canopy meets skirt.

 

Tack beadstring to front center and back center of canopy. Glue message around front of ball as shown in photo.

This design makes a nice gift for the new baby. Leave off the beadstring and put baby's name on ball instead of Baby's 1st Christmas.
