Does Hamm have football in her future?
By ADAM TEICHER - The Kansas City Star
If and when Mia Hamm moves on to a new career, the Chiefs have a suggestion.
How about a successor to placekicker Pete Stoyanovich?
Hamm wowed the Chiefs players, coaches and scouts with an impressive display of placekicking after Chiefs practice on Thursday. The U.S. women's national team is in Kansas City for Sunday's game against Canada, and two players, Hamm and goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, watched Chiefs practice.
After some brief instruction from Stoyanovich and punter Todd Sauerbrun, they attempted a few field goals.
Hamm was most successful. She nailed two straight tries from 50 yards and even made a 30-yarder with her left foot. That prompted Stoyanovich, speaking to Chiefs executive vice president Denny Thum, to say, `Denny, I'm her agent. If you want to talk to her, you have to talk to me.' "
Hamm, at least for now, is going to stick to soccer.
"We got a sense of what they do but we don't know the type of situations they go through," she said. "It's a lot different sensation when guys are lined up at the line of scrimmage running at you. You sit there and you watch sports all the time on TV, and it's not like coming out here and doing it for real."
