Finished Size:
Approximately 42 x 64 in. [106.5 x 162.5 cm] including fringe

Materials Required:

  • Bernat Caress Chunky Weight - 3oz/85g - 152yds/139m
  • 1 x 3oz/85g balls each Colour A and Colour B
  • 4 x 3oz/85g balls each Colour C, Colour D and Colour E.
  • One crochet hook size 6.00 mm (Canadian size 4, American size J/10) or whatever size hook you require to achieve correct tension.
  • 1 wool needle
Tension:
(before weaving)

15 sts and 6 rows to 4 in. [10 cm]

NOTE: When changing colours, always draw new colour through last 2 loops of last st worked.

Instructions:

  • With A, ch 160 sts LOOSELY.
  • Base Row: Using Colour A, 1 dc in 6th ch from hook, *ch 1, skip next ch, 1 dc in next ch, rep from * across row; drop Colour A, draw Colour B through last 2 loops of last dc worked - sts. Fasten off Colour A. Turning ch counts as first dc and ch 1.
  • Row 1: Using Colour B, ch 4, turn, *1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * ending 1 dc in 3rd st of turning ch; drop Colour B, draw Colour C through last 2 loops of last dc worked. Fasten off Colour B.
  • Rows 2 to 5: Using Colour C, ch 4, turn, *1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * ending 1 dc in 3rd st of turning ch; on last row drop Colour C, draw Colour D through last 2 loops of last dc worked. Fasten off Colour C.
  • Rows 6 to 9: Using Colour D, rep Rows 3 to 6; on last row drop Colour D, draw Colour E through last 2 loops of last dc worked. Fasten off Colour D.
  • Rows 10 to 13: Using Colour E, rep Rows 3 to 6; on last row drop Colour E, draw Colour A through last 2 loops of last dc worked. Fasten off Colour E.
  • Row 14: Using Colour A, rep Row 3; drop Colour A, draw Colour B through last 2 loops of last dc worked. Fasten off Colour A.
  • Rep Rows 1 to 14 for pattern 5 times more (85 rows), ending with Row 14 of pattern and omitting Colour B in last dc worked. Fasten off.
NOTE 1: When weaving vertical stripes, use 2 strands for each stripe cut in 82 in. [208 cm] lengths.

NOTE 2: When weaving vertical stripes, allow 5 in. [12.5 cm] of yarn for fringe at each end of every stripe.

Finishing:
To weave vertical stripes:

1ST STRIPE: With right side facing, using wool needle and 2 strands of Colour C, starting in beg of Row 1 of pattern st and working along one long edge, insert needle from FRONT to BACK in first space, bring needle from BACK to FRONT in first space of row above, pull yarn through being careful not to twist yarn, *insert needle from FRONT to BACK in first space of next row above, pull yarn through being careful not to twist yarn or pull too tightly, rep from * along entire long edge of afghan, allowing 5 in. [12.5 cm] of yarn for finge at each end.

2ND STRIPE: Using wool needle and 2 strands of Colour C, starting in beg of Row 2 of pattern st, *insert needle from FRONT to BACK in 2nd space, bring needle from BACK to FRONT in 2nd space of next row above, pull yarn through being careful not to twist yarn, rep from * along entire afghan.

Working across afghan in succeeding spaces, rep first and 2nd stripes in following colour pattern:

+ *3 stripes Colour D, 3 stripes Colour E, 1 stripe Colour A, 1 stripe Colour B* , 3 stripes Colour C, rep from + 5 times more, rep from * to * once, then 2 stripes Colour C.

Fringe:
Knot each group of 2 strands in base row across one short end and in top of last row across other short end. Trim ends.
