McCall's Stitchery, Motifs in Crochet, Vol. III, 1972

Summer hat & bag set is simple to make with wheel motifs of three sizes. Motifs, crocheted with double strand of cotton, are joined by sewing a few stitches together. Band of beret is rounds of single crochet decreased to fit.

SIZE:
Beret fits all sizes.
   Bag is 8-1/2" x 6".

MATERIALS: Mercerized crochet cotton, 4 250-yard balls. Steel crochet hook No. 1. Lining material, 3/8 yard. Sewing thread to match.

GAUGE: Large motif = 4" diameter.  Medium Motif = 2-3/4" diameter.  Small Motif = 1-1/4" diameter.
9 sc = 2".

Note: Beret and bag are worked with double strand throughout.

BERET: LARGE MOTIF (make 1): With double strand, ch 6. SI St in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in back lp of each ch around - 12 sc.
Rnd 2: * Sc in back lp of next sc, 2 sc in back lp of next sc, repeat from * around - 18 sc.
Rnd 3: Working in back lps only, * sc in each of 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around - 24 sc.
Rnd 4: Working in back lps only, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of 3 sc, repeat from * around - 30 sc.
Rnd 5: Working in back lps only, * sc in each of 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around - 40 sc. SI st in both lps of first sc.
Rnd 6: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in same sc with sl st; working in both lps, * dc in each of 3 sc, 2 dc in next sc, repeat from * around, end dc in each of last 3 sc - 50 dc. SI st in top of ch 3.
Rnd 7: Ch 3, dc in same st as sl st, * ch 1, sk 1 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around, end ch 1, sI st in top of ch 3.
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in each dc and ch-1 sp around. Join; end off.

MEDIUM MOTIF (make 12): With double strand, ch 8. Sl st in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each ch around - 16 sc.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in back lp of each sc around - 32 sc. SI st in first sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in next sc and in each sc around - 32 dc. SI st in top of ch 3.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same ch as sI st, * ch 1, sk 1 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around, end ch 1, sl st in top of ch 3.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each dc and ch-1 sp around. Join; end off.

SMALL MOTIF (make 9): With double strand, ch 8. SI st in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each ch around - 16 sc.
Rnd 2: * Sc in back lp of next sc, 2 sc in back lp of next sc, repeat from around - 24 sc. Sl st in next sc. End off.

FINISHING: Sew 2 medium motifs tog along edges for 3 or 4 sts. Repeat twice for 3 pairs of medium motifs. Place pairs evenly spaced around large motif; fill in each space between pairs with a small motif.  Sew 6 medium motifs and 3 small motifs to large motif where they touch for 3 or 4 sts. Sew small motifs to medium motifs.
     Place 6 remaining medium motifs around circle just formed, fitting them into spaces between first ring of medium motifs (3 motifs will touch 3 small motifs). Sew touching edges tog. Sew remaining small motifs between medium motifs, joining each small motif to 3 medium motifs.

Headband: Join double strand with sc in free edge of medium motif.
Rnd 1: Sc in each of next 10 sc on motif, * ch 3, sc in each of 3 sc on small motif, ch 3, sc in each of 11 sc on medium motif, repeat from * around.
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc and ch around - 120 sc.
Rnds 3-5: Work in sc, dec 10 sc evenly spaced each rnd (to dec 1 sc, pull up a lp in each of 2 sc, yo and through 3 lps on hook), or to desired headsize.
Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around. SI st in next sc. End off.

BAG: Work 15 medium motifs and 8 small motifs as for beret. Sew medium motifs tog in a rectangle 3  motifs wide by 5 motifs long. Sew small motifs in spaces between.

Strap: With double strand, make ch about 25" long. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; working on opposite side, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch. SI st in first sc. End off.

Buttonloop: Attach 4 strands to center motif at one end of bag. Ch 12. End off, leaving ends for sewing. Sew ends to bag forming loop.

Button: With 4 strands, ch 4. SI st in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring.
Rnd 2: Dec 3 sc. End off; leave end for sewing.

Lining: Cut lining 30" x 10". Fold in half crosswise, right sides out; press. Pin crocheted piece to lining, centering on width of lining, 3 motifs at end opposite buttonloop at fold edge. Sew crocheted piece to one thickness of lining only, sewing around outer edge of crocheted piece. At end with buttonloop (flap end), trim lining to 1/4" outlining motifs. Turn under seam allowance on flap end, clipping as necessary. Turn under seam allowance on side edges in line with outer edges of crochet. Press. Turn under same allowances on second half of lining; slip-stitch in place.

Cut 2 pieces for gussets, 12" x 2-1/2". Fold in half crosswise, wrong side out. Stitch side edges of each gusset taking 3/8" seams. Turn right side out. Press. Fold gussets in half lengthwise; whip edges tog at bottom fold edge to make pleat. Fold up front of bag (6 motifs). Place gussets at sides. Beginning at pleat end of gusset, sew gussets to front of bag. Turn in raw edges at top of gussets in line with front; sew closed. Sew back edge of gussets to back of bag. Pleat gussets at top; sew both thicknesses to front of bag at top.

Sew ends of strap to top pleat at sides. Sew button to front of bag.
